Re: Is there any way this post-Ike casualty will actually produce?

Thanks Gabe, I was already inclined to simply let it be and see what happened. I just wondered if anyone had actually gotten a similarly-damaged banana with only a couple of small leaves to gin up...

Is there any way this post-Ike casualty will actually produce?

Prior to Hurricane Ike, I had one Ice Cream banana that I figured was due to put out a flag leaf "any week". Unfortunately, the winds forced this plant to bend in half and split. I chopped the...

Re: My First post!

Sorry y'all. I felt the same way the first time I saw it, too, and I thought everyone else was in on the acronym but me.

Re: My First post!

I planted my Ice Creams in March and they sent out flag leaves in May of the following year, and the fruit was ready to eat in September and...well...I've got about 12 bananas left. YMMV, based on...

Re: Taking pups from an Ice Cream

That's been my experience, too, but when I've planted the pups (and when neighbors have planted the pups) they've done just fine.

Re: My Ice Creams--awesome

My overwintering procedure consisted entirely of crossing my fingers.

Luckily, we didn't get a hard enough freeze to do any damage.

Re: My Ice Creams--awesome

Yes, these two Ice Cream plants are my first efforts at growing bananas. I ordered them online, and they've done well. Both produced bananas.

I ended up with about 80 bananas on the first one...

I posted photos in my photo gallery.

I'm eating the hell out of these wonderful naners!

My Ice Creams--awesome

As you may know, these were planted in March of 2007 and flowered in May of 2008. I've posted some images in my photo gallery.

Last week, I cut 4 green bananas off the right tree (the one laying...

Re: TTP, Fred's post-Ike report

bananaman88,

Check out my "After Ike" photo album. I can't believe one plant with bananas made it through with only losing some leaves. The other one, I gently lowered to the ground, then the next...

Re: when to pick the nanas

From those pictures, I'd say you'll need about 4 months until the bananas are mature.

Others on this board may have some hints for protecting the bananas during colder weather. We don't see winters...

TTP, Fred's post-Ike report

I'm lucky. We live just west of Houston (in Katy, actually), and my neighborhood escaped much of the damage from Ike. All our utilities are buried, and there aren't many large, established trees,...

Re: New photos of ice creams, zebrina

Each plant has a little over 60 bananas...so that's about 120 total.

There's a huge Ice Cream plant adjacent to the left one, and I'm thinking it should be sending out a flag pretty soon. It was an...

New photos of ice creams, zebrina

All,

I posted a couple of photos of my ice cream bananas, a zebrina which bananaman88 traded with me, and a general view of my yard.

If I stumbled upon a new genus by accident, I'll happily take credit for it....Musa Fred sounds great to me!

Re: From Pup To Fruit

Taylor, is that from 1st hand experience?

There's another thread on here about someone whose ice creams weren't ready to eat until 8 months after bearing fruit. That seems like a long time to me,...

Re: Is it a Musa ICe Cream Bananas

From my experience, Ice creams have a reddish-looking vein down the middle of the new leaves, and on the edges, but as each leaf ages that will go away and the leaves get that torn-n-frayed look.

If...

Re: From Pup To Fruit

In Houston, Texas, the time from planting to fruit was 14 months....now if I could just get a firm idea of how long it'll be from fruit to "in my belly", I'd be a happy camper...

Mine put fruit out at the beginning of June--14 months after I...

Lightbulb I built some PVC supports for my Ice Cream naners this weekend

Photos are in my photo album.

It was a whole lot easier than I had imagined. I made it out of 1-1/2" PVC. My wife had the great idea to spray paint them a very flat camo-green, and to also use a...
