Default My Very First Saba....

Bloom! Here in late June. If the hail stays away I should get Saba fruit in Coastal SC.


I also have 2 Orinoco Flags.

The saba took 26 months--thats 2 winters also when it lost its leaves and went dormant. It stayed out in the center of the yard--full sun- A hail storm wrecked it back in early May. It is the center plant.

Yes...we had low 20f temps a few times in each winter. I believe that p-stem girth was the key.

No protection at all. Center of the yard too. I fattened them up in October/November with a lot of water. I think the first layers around the p-stem freezes. The ice insulates from the cold the next layer in.

Close examination of a sheathing around the banana pstem looks like cardboard.
This source has cardboard with an r value of 3. R-value (insulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

That is a relatively high number. Throw in a layer of ice and you add more insulation. I suspect that multiple freezes would do the most damage to a dormant banana.
