Re: Thai Black stingy with the pups?

I purchased 8 Thai Black two years or so ago, and they've been odd as far as banana plants go.

Only one has flowered, 4 have pupped (one pup each) and there's little rhyme or reason that I can...

Re: Great people to do business with...

What's their definition of Large and Small banana plants? I'd love to get my hands on Saba and a few others, but there are no photos to gauge by.

Re: Time to go back out

I spent a couple of months living in Burnaby about 9 years ago. Though I do remember seeing a few palm trees back then, I couldn't imagine growing bananas there.

Of course, 9 years later, I know...

Re: Gotta Love Lowes

Thanks Kat,

Obviously this isn't one of the greater banana mysteries, but with the big box stores, you simply never know what you could be purchasing.:bananas_b

Re: What am I?

Nancy,

2 or 3 years ago I purchased a couple of marked down "basjoo" from Lowes. Unlike normal Basjoo (which I have experience growing), these pretty much die back on me, and never attained any...

Re: potash

Looks like you made the right choice.

Good news: If you had purchased the muriate of potash, you'd likely be dealing with a significant (and unhealthy) level of Chlorine.

Re: Banana Patch Gone Crazy

When the pseudostem of a banana is regularly damaged, pups are often produced. Year after year, they'll continue to multiply, particularly with the underground corm maturing and growing further in...

Re: Biochar, Milli-turds, & a Manzano

Fascinating.

Could you tell us anything about what was happening above the soil line, like the size and number of leaves produced? How often have you been watering?

It's amazing progress for a...

Re: problems pushing

I'm seeing the same thing, and it's not limited to a particular variety. Black Thai, Namwah, and others are doing the same thing.

I wouldn't worry about it. I pull the tip of the caterpillar leaf...

Re: Any tips for 1st time banana grower...

Let me offer you some harsh advice, just for the sake of saving your plants.

1. Repot all plants in small containers: 2-6 inches would be best

-You have more control over what the plants are...

Re: Any tips for 1st time banana grower...

The tissue cultured banana plants are usually grown under 60% shade cloth (or thereabouts) so it's imperative you slowly acclimate new arrivals before leaving them out in direct sun.

When I first...

Re: Could you guys/gals tell me whats wrong with my Ensete maurelii

Interesting. So how does the rest of the plant look? Is it only one or two leaves showing signs, while the rest looks healthy and hale?

Re: Could you guys/gals tell me whats wrong with my Ensete maurelii

I'm with MM4birds, looks to me like water-sunburn. What time of day do you water, and how often? Do you water the entire plant, or only around the base?

Re: Abyssinian question

I guess it's just genetic. Purchased all mine between July and October as TC, and they grew slowly. This year, I heavily amended the bed for my tropical wall and just went hog wild on watering and...

Re: I Think I'm Gonna Cry! :(

Great to hear Figaro.

Shame to lose a months' growing time, but it's better than the alternative.

Re: Abyssinian question

I'd heard various horror stories about growing Ensete ventricosum var. Maurelii here in Florida and decided to start testing things out for myself. It's not even June yet, so things can certainly...

Re: What a spring!

Sailfish, that's awesome to hear. I know we've had 2 months of good temps after a mild winter, but I'm amazed to see so much going on so quickly for you.

How old are your plants?

Re: How Big Until it Can Take Full Outdoor Sun? -pic-

Howard, I realized there's one thing I should warn you about. These fresh TCs obviously have no corm, and the roots are negligible. Be cautious when watering the plant during the sunlight...

Re: How Big Until it Can Take Full Outdoor Sun? -pic-

Howard, I'm proud to be the one to tell you, honestly and with complete sincerity, that size does not matter. :08:

The plant could be the size of a thumb tack or a telephone pole, either way,...

Re: My second banana plant

All my banana purchases came from Wellspring. 20+ Musa Basjoo, 8 Musa Black Thai, 1 zebrina, 2 maurelii, and 2 IC/BJ, and A LOT of Alocasia/Colocasia elephant ears. I haven't had any problems with...

Re: My second banana plant

Viper,

The cut leaves don't mean anything. Some get trimmed to fit into their packaging, that's all.

Potting soil is largely inconsequential. Anything that retains moisture but doesn't sit...

Re: I Think I'm Gonna Cry! :(

Don't know how much it might help, but you can try a diluted foliar feed in the morning hours when the plant is most susceptible to it. Think of it like an IV bag for a patient.
