Re: 2 urgent questions

I overwinter most of mine in pots in the garage. I remove all the leaves and allow them to dry out then put the pots on pallets so they are raised off the concrete floor. This insulates them from...

Re: ensete maurelii red-creating pups

I wouldn't cut the corm apart, just cut it down and scoop out part of the meristem to start the process. If you can add some bottom heat that will speed it up. You should see pup growth within...

Re: Cats and bananas

I make a "collar" out of cardboard that goes around the stem of the banana and covers the pot. This stops our cat from using them as a lavatory in the winter !

Re: Musa Sikkimensis Gigantea

Very nice James, I really like this plant, they colour up well and are obviously different to a Red Tiger when you put them side by side.
I will over winter mine indoors this year.

It survived the...

Re: ensete maurelii red-creating pups

Yes, i do this every year with at least one maurelii. With our weather unless they are kept in a heated area over winter they die rapidly so i usually keep one inside and force it to pup to ensure i...

Re: Ants in my banana pot. Should I worry?

I had a nest in a Red Tiger pot this year. It was kind of interesting watching them come and go with eggs and food. I just left them to it, they don't harm the plant and are gone soon enough.

Re: strangled tropicana

The pup growth is fairly normal for a super dwarf Cavendish - mine are similar and little prince is even more prolific. It does look a little restricted at the top but not as bad as Ensete...

Re: What is the best way to over winter ensetee maurelli

The only way i have successfully over wintered this plant is to remove all leaves and roots then dry out in front of a dehumidifier for a couple of days.
I then sit the plant on the top of a pot of...

Re: Could these be Musa Basjoo seeds?

Re: Could these be Musa Basjoo seeds?

Using the terms Japanese fiber musa b, and that it originates from china and is frost tolerant to -20c definitely suggests they believe the seed to be musa basjoo.

Either way it will be interesting...

Re: discussion of bananas grown in water

At least half a dozen. I only use this method to get pups to grow roots.
Once they have rooted i pot them up and grow them on as usual.

Re: discussion of bananas grown in water

The key to this for me is simply the temperature and 02 content of the water.
If the water temperature is at least temperate and the 02 level at near saturation then there should be no problem...

Re: Transplant shock?

Cut all but two of the leaves off then cut the two you leave on in half. Pot them up, water, then keep them in the shade to reduce transpiration until they start to show signs of new growth.
