Re: Can musa basjoo grow from seed?

Ahhh.... There may be a bunch out there, but they're not cheap for what you can find! I was hoping to be able to grow 50-100 of them.... guess the slow game is the way to go...

Can musa basjoo grow from seed?

I have been looking around for basjoo seeds the last couple days in hopes of starting some over this winter and it seems they don't really exist? I saw one search result that said they don't grow...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

I didn't even bother to plant mine in the ground this year, was lazy and left them in the pots from last over wintering. Made life a bit easier this fall but I don't think they grew as much as being...

Re: Why am I getting next to no growth from my dwarf brazilians

Our average highs are around the 75-85 this year. No super hot spells. I've been commenting to my wife how this summer has been cooler, while still enjoyable is just not what my bananas probably...

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

My three corms have been in pots for 2-3 weeks with no sign of life at this point. I haven't dug them up to check either though. I water about 1 time per week to keep the soil from being totally...

Don't know if I want to mix up a batch of poop to dip my corms in.... I'll just see how things go. :-)

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

So add another shell of 1 inch over my existing cone and stuff it completely with batting and that would do the trick?

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

I did cones like yours this winter, just without the inner square. I piled mulch as heavily as I could inside as well and then mounded dirt and mulch around the ouside but it didn't matter. Once...

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

I removed as much mush as I could get at with a knife, I guess we'll see. These corms were in the ground, it was just a terrible winter here. We'll see if anything comes up out of what I stuck back...

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

I'm glad I took a few basjoos in and potted them. I have about 25 dwarf brazilians that are tiding me over and will be planted outside. I just want to get it to having basjoos in the ground...

Re: Are my Basjoos dead?

Ok, I cut off as much as I could and have now put them in their own dedicated pots filled with planting soil. Do I want to hit them with water right away? There's some moisture in the soil, but...

Are my Basjoos dead?

I left a couple basjoos out for the winter in the ground to see if I could get them to make it. They were covered with mulch and cones.

Anyways fast forward to now. Upon uncovering them I saw...

Re: So am I hosed?

So at what point am I good to pull these cones off? When lows are no longer freezing? Is that the rule of thumb?

Re: So am I hosed?

A bunch of the ones I left in the ground started out as little 6 inch plants last spring so I didn't put them down very deep. I tried to mound as much mulch up on them as I could.

If I get a chance...

Re: So am I hosed?

I had 4-6 inches of mulch built up around the pstem before I stuffed a piece of insulation batting in and covered with a 1 inch thick styrofoam box I made for them this year.

Re: So am I hosed?

Guess it doesn't really matter, just wondering what to expect. I haven't opened up the remaining cones and figure I'll find the same things.

Re: So am I hosed?

They were only in the ground one year. Some were a couple feet tall, and a couple of them were about 6 foot tall with pumps when I cut them down and put the cones over them.

I guess my question is...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

So at what point do others take their protection off of their outdoor in ground bananas? I tried to peek at one of mine today, and I don't think it looked that great. I unboxed one of my palm trees...

I'll try to take some pics sometime in the near future. I still have about 10 hours of digging up cannas and five palm trees I need to build boxes for yet before the snow flies so I'll be out in the...
