Not sure what might be causing the problems with your fig, they like a fertile well draining soil. If you get some cuttings they should be woody stems, last years new growth.

I've never tried E. glaucum, only E. ventricosum. I'd suspect it was also edible, though - the same way that all Musas bear fruit that can be eaten.
