Re: Mail order recommendations
The squirrel problem was completely solved by this: Squirrel, mink, rat, and other pests traps (http://www.kania.net/2500.htm)
Use sunflower seeds; anything like peanut butter and you'll have it...

Re: Mail order recommendations
I normally whacked them off about 36" from the ground when frost killed them, then put two frost cloths over the stand. In spring, those things shot right up from the center of the stems and grew at...

Re: Mail order recommendations
Thanks. I did try that and they still seemed to want to flag in August or September anyway. Also, I had major squirrel problems; rascals actually KILLED a couple of plants completely by chewing to...

Re: Mail order recommendations
Yeah, dudes, I really loved my Blue Java. The plants were just awesome and beautiful.
I had no real problem keeping them alive; when it frosts here, the plant simply come up the next year and are...

Re: Mail order recommendations
I wish I'd thought of that before I dug them up. :)
Actually, though, these things were humongous, and I mean really huge. Several of the corms were over a foot across, and it wouldn't have been...

Re: Mail order recommendations
Actually, the Rajapura did great insofar as the plant was concerned. Got HUGE and flowered every year, just wasn't enough time for the fruit to mature before freeze hit.
I will definitely try and...

Re: Mail order recommendations
I probably didn't phrase myself very well, sorry. I guess what I meant to say was I am replacing my banana stand with some that possibly have a shorter fruiting season. The dilemma I've had is that I...

Re: Mail order recommendations
Thank you for the recommendations and the warning. This is exactly what I needed. :goteam:
As for the Blue Java, they are situated on a fence row (privacy fence 6') and they are in sun all day. ...

Mail order recommendations
I moved to north central Florida several years ago and have been trying to get bananas to fruit ever since, but we have too short a growing season here before they freeze. With the help of some...

WTF? Why no bananas???
OK, finally time to get serious whassup with my bananas. They grow beautifully; they are 15 feet tall and look like something right out of the rain forest. I have two varieties: rajapura and blue...

Re: Question on the fruiting process
Well, again, that would be RAIN. It's 85 degrees outside with 1,000% humidity in north central Florida. The only ice around here is in one's refrigerator.
It was actually pouring down rain when I...

Re: Freakin SQUIRRELS!
Patty, you live in Wisconsin. The squirrels aren't as smart up there, believe me. I used to live in Iowa, and those squirrels weren't as smart, either.
Now that I've moved to Florida, the...

Re: Freakin SQUIRRELS!
Actually, I've already tried the sacrificial banana thing, to no avail. They're not interested in the bananas, only the plants.

Re: Freakin SQUIRRELS!
Sorry to burst your bubble, Sailfish, but save your cayenne pepper for cooking. It will have no affect on the squirrels whatsoever.
I literally dumped it into the side stalk indentations of all my...

Re: Freakin SQUIRRELS!
Critter Ridder does NOT work. They walk right through it. The local county extension people suggested milorganite; they walked right through that, too.
Hopefully someone here has had experience...

Freakin SQUIRRELS!
These furry Nazis are absolutely destroying my plants. I posted awhile ago, and it seems letal means are the only true recourse.
I have a small rodent trap set, but there are SO many of them that...
