Re: Home depot Blue java or Namwa?

You didn’t notice the silvery sheen to the underside of the Blue Java?

Re: Home depot Blue java or Namwa?

It’s my understanding that the whole “Ice Cream” theme got started by folks doing an online search for “best banana” or something like that.

I pretty much decline to use the term, as the name has...

Re: Cutting back question

Getting a Blue Java to fruit in Ohio is probably going to require a heated greenhouse of some sort.
You’ll have way less headaches going with a dwarf variety that can be lugged inside for winter,...

Re: New tree not growing.. help!

‘Nanners are notoriously hungry feeders, fond of that extra blast of potassium but if recently repotted, will frequently produce their growth primarily as roots, & when the pot gets filled, the...

Re: New tree not growing.. help!

Your plant was probably just stressed, is it growing again?
When the trunk gets trashed, there’s a good chance you can salvage the corm.

Re: best banana for sacramento, ca

Orinoco is a great cooking banana, my favorite for frying. Usually not as sweet as the store variety but with a more complex flavor.
There are some good Asian grocery stores in town that will have a...

Re: best banana for sacramento, ca

Basjoo are the all time favorites around Sac but as for edibles, Dwarf Orinoco do pretty good around here.
By buddy has had good luck with Blue Java but it does lousy by me.
What's your altitude?
A...

Re: Hey

We had to cut down a couple trees that provided a little partial shade so the Dwarf Orinocos are baking on the South facing wall of the house (but providing excellent shade for my office).
I...

Re: I Want A True Blue Java

The term "Ice Cream" banana is practically useless, because it has been used to name at least 2 different cultivars.
Also, somewhere on the web, "Ice Cream" has been referred to as being the best...

Re: Who likes Tamales steamed with banana leafs

We just had some chicken breast (which I am not normally a fan of ) wrapped in the pepperleaf & banana leaf; it stayed very moist & tender.
The pepperleaf is not a strong overpowering flavor, maybe...

Re: Who likes Tamales steamed with banana leafs

I like to wrap my snacks in "Mexican pepperleaf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_auritum)" (thanks Kat!) before wrapping in the 'nanner leaves.

Re: The perfect banana

heh heh heh... yah, but to take that just a little further, I was thinking "Ice Cream".
(assuming they don't go bonkers trying to figure out "which" version. :ha:

Re: grey water

Providing there isn't too much detergent in the water, most plants just LOVE gray water.
(we'd get 13 strawberries to the quart using it)
Mine will be getting it a bit later on this summer.

Re: Looking 4 Blue Java / Ice Cream Pup

If you're after fruit, contrary to what you may have read on the web, Blue Java / Ice Cream are not the tastiest out there.
(that's not even addressing the other cultivars sold as "Ice Cream")
I...

Re: Marion, Olallie and other West Coast berries

The boysenberry was pretty tasty; the thornless have just started producing (2 seasons) so the jury is still out but the berries were huge.

Varieties of thornless are "Apache...

Re: Free bubble wrap?

You might try Craigslist and "Freecycle.org".
I've utilized Freecycle quite a bit to both get rid of stuff that was "too good to throw away" & it was where we got all the PVC pipe we needed to build...

Re: Ice cream/Namwah Pups Front Landscape.

From the looks of things, they're getting close to maximum "happy" size, though you should be able to get away with the current size pot at least over winter if you don't mind stunted/slow growth.
