You might be a banana fiend ......

Hey Y'all ,
I thought this would be a fun thing to keep going ! Please add to it !

You may be a banana hobbyist if ......

1. you buy so much fertilizer that homeland security has an eye on you .

2. You look at your plants 2-3 times a day to see how much they've grown since the last time you checked .

3. you've ever worked this problem : Dinner out 15.87
Ramen noodles - .12
total left for plant purchase 15.75

4 . Your kids were upset more than once because the "pup" you told your spouse you were bringing home was musa and not canine .

5. While plant shopping , your spouse becomes frustrated and exclaims "All you care about are bananas ." to which you reply " Not true ! I have several ensetes and 15 or so aroids !" .

6.The friends/relatives who were at your place for christmas drive around the block trying to find your house in june saying "That could'nt possibly be the same place".

7.Your "other than banana" plants (lawn ,azalea ....)grow less than 6 " per day and you wonder what the problem is .

8. Your friends tell you that you should get some parrots or monkeys .

9. You read the (entire)wiki more than once .

10. You've ever wanted to move further south just to be able to garden the way you would like .

11. You read about global warming , freak out a little , then calm down when you think "I wonder what my zone will be ten years from now ?" .

12. Your lawn is disappearing quickly with the onset of new planting beds .

13 .Your neihbors often say "they're shoveling another pile of something over there!" or "what's that smell???".

14.You spend 300 bucks to drive a few states over and visit for a few hours with a fellow grower and trade naners that would have only cost $8-$20 to ship.

:bananarow: :choochoo:
You guys keep this goin' ! It should be a lot of fun !

This is really fun.

I will add no 15. + 16

You may be a banana hobbyist if ......

15. you know you will probably never harvest a edible one in your zone.

16. You not buy a bunch in the store but fertilizer, plants and so on.

so much fun!

18. You check each house you drive by to see if they're growing bananas, and when you catch one from the corner of your eye, you barely avoid crashing your car as you rubberneck and take your eyes off the road!

"8. Your friends tell you that you should get some parrots or monkeys ."

19. You've already got parrots or monkeys! (We have 4 parrots)

And the rubbernecking thing is so true, and dangerous, perhaps even more so since so few people grow the cool stuff up north!

Great thread,

21. During growing season, no one wants to come to your house because if they do, they get the banana tour. In which they have to meet each and every plant, and they get the name, how big the plant should get, the description of the fruit, etc.

IF...

26. You dig up 20 or more plants out of your garden every year, drag them each (sometimes weighing quite a bit!) into a crawl space with 3 feet of head room (or less), then turn around in the spring and drag them all back out again and plant them BACK in the garden...just to hope to get a couple of bunches of fruit that will probably amount to 10 bananas per bunch if you're lucky.

Wow. I just had a revelation. I am a seriously ill person!

It's the "Sticky" thread at the top in the cold-hardy bananas forum HERE.

I might be losing my sense of humor digging them up and planting back out though, until I finally transition to dwarfs. I am 6'7", and the crawl space makes it pure misery on my back. It would be more fun if I had a full-sized basement, or room in the garage!

Hi!
Wow - you have some awesome guys! Aren't they just the best?!!!
Ours are: Budgie, PF Lovebird, Sun Conure, Maxi Pionus, and a Moluccan Cockatoo. :)

28. You go to a local nursery and ask if they have any bananas that produce edible fruit. And, they respond that they didn't know we could actually grow bananas here. Then they get the same "tour" lecture that drives friends and family away. :bananajoy:

If I was a few years younger I would ... hmmmm.
Might be worth doing anyway, just to shake up my kiddoes! LOL!

Pictures - the design & the tat, when you get it done ... gimme some inspiration!

And why am I reading this thread, thinking it all sounds like perfectly NORMAL behavior to me? Oh geez ... I'm too far gone to even recognize the signs of 'fiend-dom' - this looks like sensible tips to plantation planning! I need a 12-step program!

I thought about starting a contest here to help me design my new tattoo. But couldn't figure out a prize. I don't have any rare plants to offer. :(

I'm really past "the age" for tattoo's; but they are fun, I have to admit!!! And I will get the banana, hopefully this month!

Other: My sister and husband were over this evening. They came out to see our back yard. BIL made a about the yard. He said "it looks like a jungle". Hey! Success! It's SUPPOSED to look like a jungle!!! :nanerwizard: :nanerwizard: :nanerwizard:

Anna, the birds are great - non bird people don't quite get it, but the sheer intelligence in their eyes, and their actions is mind boggling. The Macaw seems to know everything that is going on, and he bursts out laughing before anyone else (people) when a joke is told. It must be the tone of voice we use, but he always seems to get the punchline! And the Amazon is plain scary, because things we said months before he all of a sudden blurts out! His vocabulary is huge, we've really got to watch our language around him!

As for the movie/tv thing, how true! I can't stand David Caruso, but I'll suffer watching him to see the great scenery on CSI Miami! Plenty of movies too, I definitely pause to see what that plant in the background is!

The guy behind me recently got a Cockatoo. Probably a Citron or a Moluccan.. I havent seen it, it's on the patio away from our sight, but it's 100% Cockatoo sounding.
The bird thinks its funny to call out my dog's name when it hears us in the yard. It's heard me call the dog's name enough that now it started to do it too. Smart little bugger. Drives my dog nuts but its really entertaining.

You are so right about non bird people not getting it. Birds are so very intelligent! And the people who say they "just mimic" definitely do not know birds! I won't even get started because I'll write an essay before I know it. LOL!!!
Our Moluccan has blurted things out that we know we haven't said to him. (We adopted him from an aquaintance two years ago in April.) Their memories are amazing!
Our Sun Conure is our best talker though. And he really understands what's going on. The one thing that really got me was when one of my fish died, and I was crying. My Sun started saying "I love you" over and over and started sounded very agitated. So I went over to him and told him I was upset about the fish dying. Honest - he got quiet, then looked right at me and said in a quiet voice - "Fish. Sorry."
