The Kings orders were to use mild 'non lethal' force if need be . When the commanders told the guards they asked exitedly "Are we to poison her if she tries to break through? " . To this the commanders replied "no you stupid twits ,his majesty did'nt say poison her , he said to give her arse a nick."

Re: You might be a banana feind ......

Hey, Lagniappe:
How do you brew compost tea?

Lagniappe 07-07-2007 10:54 PM

Re: You might be a banana feind ......

I use about 4 - 8 lbs of horse manure compost in a 100 gallon horse trough . This is aerated with a bubble wand and a cheap aquarium pump . I let it brew for about 4 -5 days (more if it's cool outside). I also add a bit of sugar or corn syrup after a few days to ensure the feeding of the aerobic bacteria / fungi .
There are a lot of recipes out there and formulations for more fungal based or more bacterial based tea . I have only done this for three months and have seen remarkable improvements in my plants .
I have plants in heavy clay soil and some in low areas . These plants often get wet feet regardless of my soil amendments . The grass in my lawn also suffers during extended wet periods . One could actually smell the sour , stagnant soil at times . The results were twisted leaves , browning ,chlorosis , and a myriad of fungal problems . The insects are also quick to prey on weakened plants.
The solution ? First I realized that the soil was too acidic ,so I applied lime . Then I realised that I had to oxygenate the soil . I did this with hydrogen peroxide . My plants looked like new again and started to grow like never before . THe reason is that the beneficial organisms began to thrive in the oxygen rich breaking down of the peroxide .
I look at this method (peroxide application) as I do chemical fertilizers , in my opinion they have their place but not in a sustainable program .
When I found out about compost tea , I felt that it was the obvious solution .
I have been applying it for almost three months now and my soil remains sweet regardless of our 'monsoon 2007 '. :nanabath:
If I've overlooked a compost tea thread I apologize .
Surely someone here is experienced with compost tea and will get a good thread going about it .I have found so many mixed stories about it and so many techniques that I just threw mine together to see what would happen .
I am very glad that I did !

Ooooooh, my neighbors would love the tea brewing! I'd be interested to hear more @ the peroxide ap you mention, I've heard of it but have never tried it. You have similar conditions as my place ie: clay, drainage, & I'd wager heat in the summer (we hit 114 under the porch a couple days ago!). I've amended, plowed, composted, tilled, limed, & beered etc for the last few years (was previously paved over w/blacktop & covered w/@ 2 inches of dirt to pass as a real yard ... NOT!). It's miles better than when we first started, but I'm always looking for improvement. The soil beneath that blacktop was as dead & toxic as anything, & I'd bet that what you're doing w/the peroxide (& tea) would give it a huge boost!

Besides, it's too dayum hot to get out there & till in manure again. Peroxide & tea? That I CAN do!

Diana

I will assume that the horse manure is fresh.
I am not sure if I can get a fresh horse manure but will a composted steer manure sold in bags at Home depot will do?

Lagniappe 07-09-2007 09:56 AM

Re: You might be a banana feind ......

I've read that tea can be mase even with active forest soil . As long as the material contains the good bugs and you provide them with the goods to create a population explosion the brew should work . Later I'll post some links of sites that I've read . They all have different recipes as well as techniques .
It's all very confusing . This is why I just threw some aged (mostly) horse manure in my trough and some water ,aerated it untill it smelled sweet , then poured it on my plants as a foiliar feed and around the roots to supercharge the soil and kill unwanted pathogens .
