Not yet, since the volcano is as yet only spewing ash and limited incandescent blocks. However, if it clouds in tonight or tomorrow, they'll evacuate everything on the flanks, which is about 10,000 people all told, most of them in the town of Banos.

People are already voluntarily leaving East Flank towns like Bilbao and Choglontus, and ash is falling as far away as Riobamba (50 km from the crater.) I've got winds to my favour, so I just get the sound and light show even though I'm significantly closer (25 km from the crater.) I think on Friday or Satuday I'm going to go with my friends up to Las Antennas de Pillaro, about 10 km away, if it's clear.

Mitchel, I'd record it for you but since most of the impact comes from the subsonics, it wouldn't be even remotely close to what I'm hearing.

No chance of that. Pillaro, Patate, and the towns of Valle Hermoso are reporting 5 cm of ash, just today. The IG (who monitors our volcanos) has noted that the ash content of the emissions has increased by 25% since yesterday. Bilbao and the SW towns are starting to voluntarily evacuate.

The greatest danger from an eruption like this one is from the sheer volume of ash that the volcano puts out, especially if it starts raining. That produces something called lahar, which is basically a gigantic volcanic-ash mudslide. What made the 1998-99 eruption so damaging was that the volcano had a small glacier on the peak, which melted when the heat picked up and created instant cement mudslides. At least this time, that didn't happen because there was no glacier left.

aww sorry to hear that. It is really sounding bad. What is the ash.. it's not like ground glass is it? I lived in Oregon when Mt. St. Helens went and I remember that was a huge deal because of it being glass and being told spray it off my car.. not rub it off etc...

From Tungurahua the ash is basicly fine particulate basalt and obsidian with trace minerals, so yeah, it's pulverised volcanic glass and other abrasives. Everybody within the range of ashfall here wears protective masks, and the wisdom is not to drive until the ash stops falling, then sluice everything off. However, in areas where the ash really accumulates, like the N and SW flank towns, people shovel it off the sidewalk like North Americans do for snow.

It might sound bad, but it's in no way as severe as the 2008-2009 eruption, which eliminated most of the crops from the SW slope towns, and damaged those on the N slope. In 2008, we saw the price of mandarins go from $1 for about 50 to $1 for 12 - this was the volcano's fault. However, the 2009 crop was a bumper thanks to the renewal of the soils vis a vis the ash. This year the food problem will be worse, but not because of the volcano - because of the drought.
