Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
Hey, this is my first attempt at using this method and I liked it enough to prepare a video and thought I'd share!

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
That seems like a good method. My previous method was to use a bowl of water. Cut the pom in half and split it open, using your fingers to separate the arils into the water. Any parts of the outer section of the fruit floats while the arils sink. It takes a lot longer than your method though. Not sure how much bruising of the fruit that causes though.

Bryan, I've previously used the same method as you. The method in this video damages far fewer arils. When I filled the bowl with water there was very little coloring in the water.

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
Okay, I've done another video using a gadget imported from Israel.
I've also got it posted on my web site at Purely Pomegranates which has links to other photos, etc. |

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
That's a pretty cool device...looks like it worked pretty well. Just a word of advice to anyone eating pomegranites: be cautious with your clothing!! The juice from pomegranates stains badly if it gets on your clothes, so consider wearing crappy clothes or an apron if using a method like this that splatters. I noticed when you broke it open initially you held it against your shirt and got some juice on there.

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
Thanks, Ante. Yeah, I've had similar comments from folks around here I've shown it too, many who have eaten pomegranates for 60 years or more. A guy from Pakistan who is in the pom discussion group I started said "yeah, that's the way we've always done it here" (not with the gadget, but the other method which also works very well). I wonder how many more things people in other cultures can teach us!

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
Yeah, I have explained a few times to a local friend who avoids the Internet like the plague. He once said "I won't have anything to do with the Internet, it's so impersonal". I've told him about some of the very close friends I've known mostly through the Internet, including a friend who I met in person for the first time when he attended my mother's funeral.

Yeah, I figured you knew what you were doing...that comment was more for the benefit of anyone else planning on trying the methods. Just didn't want someone to ruin their favorite shirt or something!

Re: Video on removing arils (kernels) from a pomegranate
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I use this method often and used it today and thought I'd go ahead and update this thread with this photo showing the removal of arils from an Azadi variety pomegranate.
This method is fairly simple and takes perhaps 10 minutes if you're being careful to avoid making a mess. This sequence of photos shows the removal of the bottom portion of the rind (blossom end) after making a thin cut through just the rind all the way around and working it off. The next photo shows how cuts are made following the membrane/segments which can be viewed from the end. After each section has been cut it is gently pulled apart and arils can easily be pushed off with your thumb into a bowl. After completing the removal of arils, I filled the bowl with water and stirred up the arils so that the small pieces of membrane can float to the top and removed. The rinsed arils are then drained in the colander and are ready for enjoyment. These arils were used as a colorful and flavorful addition to a green salad for Thanksgiving dinner. |
