Norton Antivirus shuts off if not renewed
Well I wasn't aware of this - bought NAV 2008, free upgrade to 2009 I'm used to every AV product I have ever used simply stopping the updates Nope Norton SHUTS IT OFF when the subscription expires ![]() Unless Norton changes this I've used their product for the last time In addition their "online" renewal is DOUBLE the cost of buying THE SAME SOFTWARE from other vendors AND - I just found out if you Renewed IN ADVANCE of your renewal date YOU LOST the remaining time on your subscription So they have %$#@#!! me over in the past ![]() http://www.geek-news.net/2008/09/sym...n-lawsuit.html EXTREMELY unethical business practices in my opinion For now I've installed AVG Not sure if I will stick with that or go with something else |

Check with your internet provider... some broadband packages, such as Roadrunner (Time Warner), include free AntiVirus that renews yearly as long as you are a customer. Mine comes with CA's eTrust security, which is really good.

I have used Norton and McAfee in the past but use Avast now. It is free if you aren't using it for a business. I recommend it! Norton $crewed me over as well, and way over priced for the service you get if you ask me. Just my 2 cents! ~JaNan

Use NOD32. It's written and designed by Slovaks and also supported by the brightest programmers from my university here in Slovakia (one of few really good Slovak businesses). They make progress each day.
If you must use antivirus, that is. If not, then don't use antivirus at all. Learn how to restore partition images. ![]()

Agreed, and most PC geeks will say the same. I dumped Norton and installed ESET and my old PC is now way faster and safe too! No more slow downs while Norton updates. ESET updates while I'm using the PC and I never even know until the little window says something.

I've been building PC systems for years and have fixed who knows how many virus laden machines over the years. I have used almost every virus system that is out there and recommend hands down Kaspersky Internet Security!
Norton is such a memory hog and does not catch everything. Its so popular because of the contracts they have to be installed on new machines. Its one of the worst ones out there in my opinion! I've installed Kaspersky on well over 100 machines and most of them for people that also had problems with clicking on the wrong stuff and filling their machines with ad ware! 4 programs I recommend to be loaded on all machines. Internet Security Software 2010 for Home Computer Security - Kaspersky Lab Glary Utilities - Reviews and free Glary Utilities downloads at Download.com Glary Utilities... its free and keeps your system nice and tidy! Revo Uninstaller - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com revo uninstaller its free, use it to uninstall any programs you don't want on your system. It gets all the files left behind. CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com ccleaner free as well... great little program that cleans up your pc as well! No need for any ad ware removal programs as Kaspersky catches all ad ware! I have 6 kids that and 5 computer systems at the house and many years ago when I wasn't using Kaspersky I would have all kinds of computer issues. Since I started using Kaspersky I have not had a single ad ware or virus and believe me when I tell you a few of my computers are really put to the test!

If you are using Microsoft Windows XP or earlier, you can download for free Microsoft Defender and then throw away all the others. If you are using Microsoft Vista, it is already included.

No offense Richard... but that is not very good advice.
Most hackers virus makers ad ware punks and over all internet bad guys spend all their time programing stuff to crack Microsoft software. One of the things that makes a program such as kaspersky so successful is the constant updating it does to counteract new stuff trying to infect your machine. Kaspersky updates every hour! There are a lot of people out there sitting at computers 24/7 trying to get your Identity and all kinds of other crazy stuff such as hijack your system or coerce you to buy something you don't need. Windows defender does not update frequently enough and it has always been buggy and has to be reinstalled frequently! You can do a Google search and see all kinds of questions from people trying to fix issues with windows defender over the years!!!

My puter came w/ Norton AV free for one year & when the year was up, I got a email to renew Norton - so I did & paid for it online. For the next year, it didn't work - I got all kinds of viruses. Then, I got another email another year later to renew & the 'from' addy was a junk addy - not Norton. I paid some idiot who took my $$!!! I was a newbie then.
Thanks to all for the links to free AV! Forgot to say that if you download another AV, Norton won't go away to let them on your puter. Even if you remove the program. You need a special "key" from Norton to remove it from your puter.

No offense taken. Under a lawsuit from the European Union, Microsoft was required last year to provide industry-grade virus software built into Vista and a back-compatible upgrade to Defender. I'm an old ARPANET implementer and perfectly satisfied with the current release.

run revo uninstaller as Norton still leaves a few files on there.
It leaves registry files and a few other files that sometimes interfere with other AV programs.

Yes it sure will, run all those programs after you install and run kaspersky and it will make a noticeable difference in your computer. If you need some help with it PM me and I will can walk you through "flushing" your computer system.

Whatever program you choose, I'd trust whatever is highly rated at cnet.com for their programs. Personally, I use the freeware, and have had no issues for more than 5 years.
I use: -Avast Virus Protection -AdAware (pop-up and ad ware protection) -Advanced System Care (System Tune up, BS sweeper and file sorter/compacter) -C.Cleaner (wipes unnecessary files from the computer) All of these are free, which to me is the best deal around!
