This is good info as we are trying to learn more about Nanaers, because its the computers that allow us to do so. We need to protect the tools that help us learn.

revo uninstaller is much more user friendly for non computer savy then regedit.

regedit is just a registry editor and a whole lot easier to make a mistake with you're registry. Revo uninstaller simply uninstalls a specific program and removes all files associated with it in a very safe and easy manor. Revo also has other features that are very easy to use... those 2 programs aren't even in the same league... regedit is simply a utility program offered by Microsoft and requires more computer knowledge to keep from deleting something you may need.

AdAware is way outdated and the software technology and bad guys making stuff have moved way beyond that program. Lavasoft has not been able to keep up with the bigger internet security companies and compete in that market they stopped supporting Se its no longer free. Not good software!!

If you follow your advice and go to Cnet you will see that you should not be using AdAware since 2007!

Ad-Aware 2007 Internet security and firewall reviews - CNET Reviews

Using internet security and virus protection that is free may seem great but its not such a great idea. The other programs yes... Look at it like this you have all these bad guys getting paid a lot of money to get into your computer or trying to steal your identity! They are much smarter than the people working on "free" programs and much more motivated than the people working on "free" programs!

If you had a choice between a mall security guard getting paid minimum wage that failed to get onto the police force to protect your life or the cop who has been trained for 20 years and getting paid much more to do his job to protect your life what would you choose?

I am one that does not take computer security lightly, I had a friend that got their identity stolen from some hacker that put a keystroke logger on to their computer. I didn't know them at the time it happened but was around as they were cleaning up the mess. Horrible thing to go through.

Paying for a good quality Internet Security Suite that protects your computer from the evils out there is way worth the investment. Especially for those that are not computer savy!!!!

Anyone else reading this just letting you know I made those recommendations out of many many years of experience, not just because its something use or like! I've built many computer systems for a lot of people over the years. I have even gotten into overclocking and water cooling and various mods on computers. My next project that has been put on the back burner until maybe next summer is to build a glass enclosure in my office and put all the guts from all of the household computers into it with an AC unit on top as an interesting conversation piece. Hoping I make the front page of Digg.com when I finish that... haha

-Advanced System Care (System Tune up, BS sweeper and file sorter/compacter)

With kaspersky on your computer you don't need any ad aware or malware software!

Its internet suite is much more efficient at keeping it off your computer and getting them off of your computer. All those other free programs do is remove them after your computer has been infected. Better solution it to of not gotten them on their in the first place. I have not had any ad aware or malware on any of my computers in the last 5 years since I started using Kaspersky!

I uninstalled a few programs now & will download Kaspersky now. I thought it was free. What does Glary Utilities do? What's the diff between that & ccleaner?

glary utilities has a lot more functions and does a lot more to clean your system than Ccleaner but Ccleaner gets a few internet leftovers that glary misses. I run both programs once a week on all my machines.

on glary utilities use the 1-click maintenance and check all the boxes before running it

Also Glary utilities expands and simplifies all of the Microsoft system tools as well including a program someone mentioned before called for editing your registry.

I find this quote interesting. I'm wondering how you know you have no spy or malware if your only using one program. I read an article where this guy tested all the major free and pay malware programs and found that all of them found and missed different things. All in all he found Malwarebytes to be the most efective which is why I bought the full version.

I should also add that since using ESET I have never found any add or malware on my pc.

well back before I used Kaspersky I got really into tweaking windows and messing around with registry's as well as modding my computer to run really really fast. After playing around with all that and learning the ins and outs of the windows program and computer architecture I can pretty much look in a few places on my computer and know of any changes and look around for things that are running that I did not install. I have other programs running that tell me how hot all my chips are how fast all my cooling fans are running as well as how much power my CPU is pulling from my power supply at any given time. I was also into Gaming for a bit as well.

Not to mention with all my kids I have my network set up so I know everything that is going on when I am not around!

basically I am pretty dialed into what my computers performance is and if it blinks too slow I try to find out why... lol

I have a Unix dual boot set up and play with that a lot as well.

The review you read is based on computers already having the ad aware and malware. The programs function is to fix a problem that is already there not stop it from happening in the first place. A good internet security suite such as Kaspersky keeps you from getting it on your machine in the first place! But there are those people that have some compulsion to keep clicking things they shouldn't even when a program keeps telling them not to or asked you if your sure you really want to do that, like my father in law.... hahaha

One way that a lot of people get their machine hijacked is from visiting a site that someone built that doesn't really know what that they are doing. Hackers search the internet for sites that they can get into easily and drop a little trojan in the site programing. My father in law used to get trojans all the time on his computer from the crappy hunting sites he always visits. He uses citrix to log into his work and the hacker ended up being able to access his companies network once he logged into it... was a big mess!

Phishing is a HUGE business for all kinds of purposes from just trying to find out what you do all day in your internet travels to getting all your banking info or trying to get you to go into business with some some official from Nigeria...

A good internet security suite will stop all this from happening!

Uh oh, Kaspersky takes up over 250mb of space & I don't have enough. The download got aborted. Would removing more programs give me more space?

Depending on what programs you would remove. FOr instance Visual Studio 2008 would do the trick (5 to 10GB). What are your hard drive details? Partitioning, space, partition size... It can't be problem nowadays to fit 250MB somewhere.

No patty you need to delete some things from your hard drive. You should have at least 10% free hard drive space for programs to work correctly. How big is your hard drive?

ya its 2009 my phone stores 32 gigabytes... lol

Between my computers I have 10 terabytes of space.

Resource hog is not meaning how much space it takes on a hard drive, its how much memory it uses while running. Ram memory, hard drive space its takes up is irrelevant. Unless you have no hard drive space like patty said, then that,s a problem that no program is going to fix. In order for your operating system and all your programs to work properly you must always have at least 10% of your hard drive empty. If you don't you need to delete a ton of video's, pics, or mp3's or get a bigger hard drive.

Been busy all day. I removed more programs... found my packing slip from when I bought puter in 02.
20GB 5400RPM Ultra ATA hard drive
128 MB DDR SDRAM at 266MHz
whatever that all means.
I was going to put another memory card but Best Buy said they were out...they really didn't want me to buy one to put in myself...they wanted to do it so they could take my $$$
I also downloaded BIGDAWG's AVG but at the end it said "installation failed". I think my puter went poo poo.

you really need more ram bad!

If you are running XP you really should have at the very least 1 gigabyte of ram. You put more RAM in there and you will be surprised how much better and faster your computer is going to work!

With such a small hard drive you really need to make sure and delete everything you don't need.

Find out what ram your machine can use with this link and buy from this site!
