Question Computer question

Since this is the only forum I am on, I'm hoping someone can help me with this. A few days ago, my computer began slowing on logging onto sites, eventually no access at all. Some would access, some would not. Last night everything went out. This morning, I rebooted, ran diagnostics, all to no avail. Finally, I did a system restore to yesterday morning and it seems to have fixed it, at least for now. Does anyone know what may have caused this and how to avoid it in the future? With no smart phone, this desktop is my only access to the Internet.

Hi mate, guessing your on winblows......install update and run ccleaner, malwarebytes and spybot they all have free versions still I would imagine, you should be able with cleaner to stop them from running at boot up if ram is an issue.
Are you running windows 10 and what are your PC specs?
Run defrag often, the apps above will help keep your system clean and bug free.
Any noise that you have not noticed before from your rig, and are the fans inside clean?

Likely adware & pups are causing the problems. Download and run Malwarebytes; SuperAnti Spyware; and Spybot D&S (Search & Destroy) free versions. Install & update, the run each one at a time. .... Using a free online scanner is good too. Mcafee & Housecall are good too.

*** If the virus scanner is unable to update, then this is a good indication their update link (URL) is being blocked or redirected. Try setting your DNS server (network adapter setting) to 8.8.8.8 and try again. ... If the link is being redirected, it can be done thought the system 'Host' file or a DLL file.

The fans are quiet. I have Windoze 10, but no idea what the specs are. I suspected it was a clogging issue and Avast is taking up a TON of space. I managed to delete two of them and paid for a driver updater, although my printer STILL won't work. I will certainly look into those recommendations, thank you very much!

'Driver updater' software/app are usually a rip-off. Unless you are having a problem with a specific software or hardware then a driver update is not needed. .... The programmer/company that make the 'driver updater' software tries to convince everyone that they must update their hardware drivers. This is total BS. BUT those update programs DO LOAD junk and viruses on to your system without your knowledge. .... If it ant broke, DON'T FIT IT.

The best way to update hardware drivers is through Windows Device Manager: click on the hardware item; click properties; click Drivers; click update. This will up date to the latest MS driver or manufacture driver for that device ... IF IT is needed ... FREE.

Egg on my face. I will definitely do that. On a side note, everything I did, I hit something right, as it seems to be operating okay. Thank you very much, for your help!

Another useful little program is 'HiJack This' .... This will show you all files or processes running in memory on your system. This is highly technical but I look for processes that I have never seen before; I check the DNS setting shown to be the same as used in the network setup; I remove/fix any BHO (Browser Helper Objects) that may be listed; I note all programs shown as started-up which I use & remove/fix any that I don't use. ... For anything I don't recognize, I will google to find out what it does and if I should remove it.

That's all I can suggest for now. You said the system is doing better now; that you must have done something right. .... Removing 'tracking cookes', adware, & pups usually speeds things up quickly. .... Keep Super Antispyware on your system and run it about once a week.

If you need help with the print please post details about the problem.

If you need help with the printer please post details about the problem.
I opened Task Manager, and Avast was taking a full 25%, so I deleted a couple of their programs, and that seemed to do the trick. It was just bogged down.

As for the printer, here is what I am getting: "Windows Photo viewer can't print this picture because there's no printer installed, or a service Windoze needs isn't running." Any ideas? I unplugged the connection to see if it would re-recognize the printer, and nothing.

Open 'Devices and Printers' and verify the printer has been installed and working. It so, print a test page. .... How does the printer connect to the computer, cable or wifi?

If the printer is not listed, click 'add a printer' at top of window and follow directions.

Thanks! Where do I find Devices and Printers in Windoze 10? XP was SOOOO frickin' easy to navigate.

It's via cable. Thanks for the reply. Had some food poisoning that mimicked a heart attack, and was trying to get a waiver for my POS car to get the registration, so I'm just now getting this.

There is a free program to add the windows Classic Shell to windows 10 which will work like windows 7. More instructions can be found at https://www.howtogeek.com/277448/how...ike-windows-7/

I have added this to several system and works great. You can also switch between the 2 (win 7 & 10). Everything is still there in windows 10; it's just how it is accessed.
