Thumbs up Passion Fruit cultivar Frederick

We've had night-time lows in the mid-30's F (2C) but as you can see below my Frederick vine could care less -- it is growing and fruit is ripening. In fact, I need to prune it!

I didn't realize it could take temps that low and still have fruit.

Your yard is on a pretty steep hill, Richard.

There was an unusual freeze here in the winter of 2007. On mature plants:
  • 3 hours pre-dawn at 27F in my yard caused a few leaves to get brown edges. It flowered the following week. In contrast, my passiflora quadrangularis was dead.
  • 3 hours pre-dawn at 23F farther inland caused significant leaf drop but it re-grew within a few months.
  • 3 hours pre-dawn at 18F in the mountain foothills killed the plant.

My wife refers to Frederick as "the little shop of horrors plant". In the summer when the temperatures here are in the high 80's (32 C), the vines grow about 3/4 meter per week. I try to keep it contained to a 50' foot long portion of the fence. The plant mass is about 40 cm (16 inches) thick. Here's a 2 meter wide section of it:

Here's the progress on my Frederick passion vine. From the corner, it spans about 16 feet along the top and bottom rails. Also, I'm training verticals up from the bottom rail vine about 4 rungs apart.
