getting rid of some figs eh? what kind

btw, i accidentally snapped off a 6" tip from one of our vines and decided to stick it in some seed starting soil with a plastic tent over top to see if i could root it. will be fun experiment

Some passiflora root very easy.Just keep it warm 65f or above,light but not direct sun and just damp.

Thanks to Sunfish, I was able to try a fruit from P. phoenicea. I had lots of P. edulis "Frederick" around from my plant, so I did a side by side comparison. I was surprised at how different they were, in many ways. The flavor was not remotely similar. Frederick basically tastes like anything sold as having passionfruit flavor (e.g., juices). P. phoenicea's taste I really don't even know how to describe, maybe melon-like. Definitely a nice flavor, but hard to describe. It was also sweeter, which isn't saying that much, because my Frederick fruit are almost always pretty sour, but phoenicea was not sour at all. Despite the somewhat larger fruit of P. phoenicea, the actual edible, flavorful part, was less than that of Frederick because of the thick rind of the phoenicea and the large seeds with less pulp.

It's always nice to try something new, especially something like P. phoenicea, which really was nothing like anything I've had before. Thanks Tony.

If you think about the difference in tastes between different species of citrus, then it makes sense that passiflora can have a wide variation as well.

Agreed. But if all you'd ever eaten was Satsuma mandarins and you didn't realize how different citrus can be and then you had a grapefruit, you'd be surprised! Being clueless about Passiflora fruits, I assumed they'd all have some variation on the flavor you get in commercial passionfruit juice. Boy was I wrong. Same sort of thing as comparing babaco to papayas. They aren't similar at all.

I love reading the taste description comparisons. Post up more as you all get to sample. I've only ever tasted a frederich(i believe that's what it was).

Side note, does anyone have some creative suggestions on how to retrellis and/or repot this:



When we bought the two starter plants i had no idea they would grow so much this winter. We got them in half gallon or one gallon pots, and they were maybe 2feet of vine. Since then we just keep wrapping and wrapping the vines down and around but this summer i have a feeling it's going to explode with even more growth!

That plant will spread 60'. You can start hanging wire on the ceiling or trim the plant. People who over winter passion vines trim them back every year and let them grow out in spring.

Re-potting is no problem just pull the root-ball out and stick it in a bigger pot.

How extensive are the root systems? I'm wondering if i'll need to repot it in the spring to get ready for the summer growth.

Tony - i have two seedling passiflora growing right now, from the seed packets you sent me. i limited myself to just two more for fear that if i sprouted more they would take over the whole house(anyone remember in jumanji hahha). And of COURSE, i lost the plant tags i had with them so i don't even know which two seedlings i kept haha. i guess i'll know if they ever flower :-P

Passion vines don't mind being root bound . I have some big plants in 5gal. pots.A 10gal. pot would be as large as you would ever need.Post a pic of the seedlings maybe someone can ID them.
