Default My First Daylily Hybrid

I made a few different Daylily crosses in Florida during the spring of 2009. I had seed by June and planted them in containers and watched them germinate quickly and grow. Last spring I planted them in my new yard here in Florida. The one I am going to show you today is one of only two that even attempted to bloom last spring. Each of the one's that bloomed last year only had one bloom each. This year all of the hybrids have grown really big and it is only their second year.

So here is the hybrid that just started blooming today. It is 'Ming Toy' X 'Stella D' Oro'. The pictures are from my cell phone and don;t do the colour justice. It is a darker orange than the pictures show. It will be interesting to see if it is a repeat bloomer.

Overview

It is my first Daylily to bloom this season. The next one that looks ready is 'Stell D' Oro'.

Hi, Jake,

Your post is very interesting. Do you have pictures of the parents of your daylily hybrids from last year? What color blooms do they have to get this orange colored hybrid?

Not just daylilies, all lilies appear to be fun and easy to grow. I only have yellow colored daylilies now. But I'd like to try this when I get more in.

Thank you for sharing with us!

Thanks everyone! The only pic of 'Ming Toy' isn't very good. You can still see the red and then yellow throat.

Here is 'Stella D' Oro'

Your Ming Toy Daylily is pretty as it is.

My maroon red snapdragon was once cross-polinated by insects, and the seed from it produced a child snapdragon with another pretty color I also like. Shown below are the parent and child pictures of the snapdragon plants I once had:

The Parent Snapdragon:

The Child Snapdragon:

The child snapdragon plant had a much prettier color than what's shown in the picture. It was orange with some pink, a very unique color.

Too bad that I no longer have any snapdragons. But it would be fun to try what you did with my Asiatic lilies if there are still any left - Rabbits are just as destructive as deer are in my garden.

Thank you for starting this thread.

That is quite cool. I know you can do this with Amaryllis easily and I would think the other lillies would be pretty easy too.

Smile Re: My First Daylily Hybrid

Thank you, Orinoko. Animals don't eat my snapdragons. Plus, I use them as cut flowers occasionally.

And thank you, Jake, for the tips on the Amaryllis. Amaryllis is another pretty flower.
