Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
Odd, but before the bloom had even fully opened up this morning it had a mild sweet scent, but as the day wore on and the flower opened more, the smell disappeared!
: o I'm really not too worried though, because Bob tells me it's quite fragrant. This is also the very first bloom, so we'll see when more open... : ) |

Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
Thanks Joan! The seeds can be found everywhere - even on sidewalks. Someone is mailing me a few more seeds shortly - maybe I can share some with ya...
"JRM" stands for Japanese Red Maple. : ) |
Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
Hollyberry, I have a lot of plants - esp indoors for winter, but I think you win the award for the most house plants inside LOL. They all look very healthy.
|
Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
I agree Patty, its like going to a greenhouse with homemade personality to see these plants. Hollyberry, I would love to try my hand at growing a JRM if you should find you have any extra seeds, will gladly pay for them. I just haven't seen any of this particular variety around here anywhere and I love them! :waving:

Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
Thanks Patty!
Joan, I would give you some maple seeds for free - a true gardener shares and doesn't charge money. Actually, charging for my stuff makes me cringe. : ( So yes, have a look around your own neighborhood and get a look at some red maples you really like. When it's the right time, return to the area and no doubt they'll be seeds blown around everywhere on the ground. They really are easy to come by. I saw tons on my bike ride last evening from huge red maple trees. I like the dwarf kinds though even if they don't produce true to the parent tree. My seedlings above came from seeds were collected from a Weeping Crimson Queen beauty. : ) |
Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
Just remember; Some maples like red, silver, Norway, etc. have seeds in the spring. Japanese maples are in the fall.

Apparently you missed the shot of my "Incense" seedlings Bob? Remember, they're the ones you can't get to sprout.
I'll post another shot of my 8 inch tall vines again later today. By all means though Bob, let's see your 2 inch little sprouts (if that) from the mystery seeds I sent... : ) |

Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
You know, HBL, I've tried twice to grow the Himalayan Blue Poppy without success. They were from mail order plants, not seed, but I'm convinced I am jinxed. :ha:
|
Re: The Hollyberry Lady's Plants and Flowers
I find them tough too Howard, even growing them from seed. The seedlings are very fragile and spindly at first. I use a mild starter formula to get them going. They can be doing just great then all of sudden die without warning. They are also extremely prone to spider mites so the small plants must be kept showered nearly daily indoors.
I just recently sprouted some more seeds, but here's is my best seedling you can see in this shot I just took today... ![]() It's thriving, but it could be dead in two days from now! This is how sensitive they are. Although the pic doesn't give the true effect, the leaves are actually a bluish/green color and quite unique. I can't wait to see the blooms. I just hope it continues to do well when I put it outside in the garden... : ) |
