Anyone in S Fla had success with artichokes?

Has anybody grown artichokes successfully here in S Fla?

Starting a new plant quest based on info from a buddy in N Fla. There are varieties of chokes that like warmer weather, but still need the cool spell I get her in PSL. Can always grow them as annual crops if the heat does them in.

I'm not in s fla, but I"ve had good luck with imperial star grown as an annual.They will turn you over a quick crop in 6 mo or so grown from seeds. Might be a good place to start.

Imperial Star is a great hybrid. It grows successfully in many climates including Veracruz MX, so I would guess it works in south Florida. Imperial Star has more thorns at the tips than Green Globe, but I think the taste is superior.

Imperial star is a great and reliable variety here in the colder climates where they're not hardy. I think the cool weather in PSL may actually help if grown from seed since they dont generally bear till the second year. One of the tricks we use to get other varieies to bloom the first year is to grow them for 6 weeks in warm temps indoors followed by 6 weeks of very cool temps simulating the first winter. When placed outdoors in the warm spring most of the plants will grow some smaller chokes that first summer. Ive done it with Green Globe and Violetto. I'd bet you have better success down there.
