Can this possibly be a bloom coming out of the ground like that? I found this while clearing out the beds for winter at the base of the Bronze Laterita.

Yep, that's flowering alright. I've never seen that happen with this species before (it happens with Musella lasiocarpa), neat!

Deb thats so cool, I've never seen that before.
I wonder if it's like when some bananas get stuck and the new growth pops out the side of the p-stem and something like this may have happened underground?Very cool in any case..... it would be pretty easy to build a small plastic tent over for protection or even a double layered tent it if you think there's enough time to see what may happen... |

Deb, I'm not sure what causes this but mine did it once when I had it in the ground and once since I've been growing it in a pot. Yours is a pup from mine but I doubt it's exclusive to this particular plant and its offspring. I would assume all M. lateritas may do this from time to time. I think mine did it one spring as new growth was starting up again. Anyhow, pretty cool, huh?

![]() ![]() Just got out there this morning and looks like the cold nights took it's toll. The bloom is looking shriveled but we put it in a pot to bring in the house and left it connected to a couple pups. I'm sure the bloom would have died anyway but what's another pot of lateritas in the house? haha |
