Yes we have BANANAS!!!
Plants, that is!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We checked the forecast & sure enough - the temp were supposed to dip into the high 30's. Sounded the bugle, called the children to arms...we got all of the plants in(trimmed & set) in under an hour. Che' was my goto girl for setting plants that needed trimmed to the side & 6yo Joseph was there with his scissors(under Mama's guidance ) trimming the brown dead stuff away. Clarissa had them sized for me & helped me 'heft' the big ones in. Baby Ren was wrapped in her Disney Princess blanket by the patio door, pulling Security! We put a heavy layer of Diatomaceous Earth on the floor to combat any of the warmth loving buggies that came in with the plants. I was supposed to have a greenhouse, but the truck required an engine rebuild... Steve(hubby) will be building shelves Thursday(here's hoping). ![]() Have been looking at lighting, will be lightly watering. Wondering if a dehumidifier will be in order... Any Hints/Helps/Comments appreciated! ~Cheryl & Family

HA! HA! HA!
Love it! Usually in the winter, the air, because our heating is drier. So a humidifier would be beneficial. You may have to mist them, the kids would probably enjoy doing that! Watch out for spider mites. They LOVE inside bananas!!! See you soon! ~JaNan

Cheryl, if you're not going to have a greenhouse ( join the club ) I would say from experience that a metal halide system keeps them growing very well during winter here. I have many of my bananas in a glassed in front porch ,this will be the second winter and last year they grew well throughout all but the coldests months.
simple room humidifier will help keep the inevitable invasion of spider mites down. Some prefer regular misting but i'm too lazy for that! Back to the lighting I got a 400 watt system complete with everything for less than $300 with shipping. I also have a 6' light mover that sends the bulb and housing 6 ' every 20 minutes increasing the effective growing area. Good Luck. |

WOW, Cheryl!! I knew you had a lot of bananas....but dang! Glad you got the 'troops' together to combat mother nature! She can be cruel at times. Well, at least the plants are all fairly small...I can't imagine what you will do next year if the same situation arises!
Best of luck with all the plants...hope it warms up for ya!

Well Thanks Cheryl & You're Welcome! ![]() Im not too new around these parts, just more of a lurker than a poster, but im working on being more active. Trust me, if I had the room, I would probably have a room similar to yours! HAHA! Im a BIG palm person, AND Banana person, and many tropicals too. In fact, I think I will post a list in the "other plants" forum. Speaking of banana pics, I just took a couple of my two current naners since I took em outside for a shower. Here they are: Dwarf Cavendish Musa acuminata 'Sumatrana' (Rojo) or Musa Zebrina Rojo ( They seem to be one in the same to me, are they? They sure look it!) In the past I have also had Basjoo, and Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' (Red Abyssinian) and Super Dwarf Cavendish. I hope I can have another successful year overwintering indoors, but this is honestly only my third try. I posted about it HERE, as I seem to be having more trouble this year than in any in the past. I hope yours make it!!! I would LOVE to have that many! Im definitely going to be doing more Basjoo this year at my new place. Im sure the ones at my old place will come back. In fact I have left a trail of them in the last two places I have lived in the last 7 years, so this just might be my third! ha! Im not the only naner person in my neighborhood either, Ive seen at least 5 or so other places with em each summer! EDIT: Holy moly bananaman! I just found my VERY FIRST THREAD EVER on here! Its even got pics of some of my palms, and my garden / bananas at my old place! Check it out if u want!EDIT II: Correction on ID of first naner photo.
