Cheryl, if you're not going to have a greenhouse ( join the club ) I would say from experience that a metal halide system keeps them growing very well during winter here. I have many of my bananas in a glassed in front porch ,this will be the second winter and last year they grew well throughout all but the coldests months.
simple room humidifier will help keep the inevitable invasion of spider mites down. Some prefer regular misting but i'm too lazy for that!
Back to the lighting I got a 400 watt system complete with everything for less than $300 with shipping. I also have a 6' light mover that sends the bulb and housing 6 ' every 20 minutes increasing the effective growing area. Good Luck.
