A quick question for all of you experts. I have two or three of many daj giants that when producing new leaves, only unroll after a little help. The new guys grow at a rapid pace, but remain tightly wrapped until I "unstick" the extreme margin that is holding it in place. Usually, the stuck margin is only one or two inches long, but when freed, the whole leaf pops out like an uncoiled spring and growth is normal from that point. This is kind of weird, as the rest of the giants and all of the other species are not doing this. The plants affected are 4' to 5' range, and did not show this earlier in their growth. Anybody else out there have this going on?

Yeah, my Ice Cream has done this a couple times. With a little help they unroll with no problem. If it's outdoors, the wind usually helps unfurl leaves....but inside, it tends to happen more often (in my experience anyway). The IC stopped doing it for me though with the last couple leaves. Not really sure what causes this, but it doesn't seem to be a significant issue.

Thanks! I figured that it must be some kind of a "passing phase" or something, because after the affected leaf pops open, it is a bit anemic looking (understandibly) but in a day or so, it will attain it's normal green and continue normal growth. Strange, huh? Thanks again!

Por los síntomas en las hojas que describes puede se una deficiencia de un nutriente, por lo general las hojas nuevas están dentro de la anterior y es como cuello de pato o de ganso o simplemente cuando sale la nueva hoja daña a la anterior y en la punta de la nueva queda un pedazo de la anterior.

Si esto es así es DEFICIENCIA DE BORO pero sería bueno que en tu próximo comentario anexes fotografías para tener una mejor idea del problema aunque podría asegurarte lo que he dicho antes. En las plantaciones de plátano aquí en Nicaragua ese es un problema común con el que me encuentro a diario.

I've experimented a little with this and the best way I've found to get them to unroll properly without destroying the tender new leaf tissue is to grab firmly it in the middle when it's most of the way out and twist in a clockwise fashion (CW from above). It would be counter-clockwise if the leaves were twisted the other way, but mine are always twisted CCW, so to unwind, you grab and twist gently CW. Do the twist thing in several places along the length of the new leaf and soon it should sorta break free/relax and start unrolling a bit on its own.

I also have tried peeling at the edge of where the leaf was rolled with my fingers and it just ended up damaging it. The twist method is the best way I have found of resolving this.

Insisto toma fotografías de las hojas especialmente de la hoja candela o cigarro y te puedo decir el síntoma, si es lo que estoy pensando después yo te envío fotos del mismo problema aquí en Nicaragua. Voy a subir algunos fotos con los síntomas que describes y ya veremos. Revisa mi galería de fotos.

G'day troops! thanks for the input. During the last couple of weeks, I have been experimenting around with the stuck leaves, and have found, once again, another use for my 409 bottle. The leaves on the affected plants are getting to the 4 foot lenghth, and the "stuck" area is from 2 to 3 inches in length. I let the leaf grow out to about 2 and one half feet, and then spray the stuck area two or three times in a five minute period, letting it soak. I then spray on either side of the stuck area with a concentrated (gentle) stream working my way into the center of the stick, lifting it up along the leaf edge until it pops open. The "adhesive" seems to be somewhat water soluble and will loosen up, with no damage to the edge of the leaf. I guess when they are outside during the summer, the rain and wind takes care of this. Hola jfern. Your english is just fine. At this time I do not have any stuck leaves, as this is only affecting two of my darjeeling giants, but when I do, I will post a photo. The other curious thing that is going on is that even after I brought the plants inside for the winter (and after the great spider mite wars of november) they are experiencing explosive growth in all of the species and the leaves almost seem to be a bit thicker than normal. I guess whatever I am doing, I will keep on doing it. Thanks again!
