Anyone know what this is on my basjoos?

Older leaves get this and usually only the 2-3 newest leaves don't have it. I'm thinking a fungus of some sorts. And thoughts? It's only on my 2 basjoos and it don't really seem to hurt them other than they don't look all full because i usually cut off the leaves that start getting that.It's defiantly not the "turning yellow and brown like a normal older banana leaf.

You wouldn't really see them just some dust on the leaves and some very fine webbing near the petiole. A lot of times they're underneath the leaves. Since its outside they can be controlled pretty well by just spraying off vigorously with a hose and pay attention to the undersides. If that fails , insecticidal soap works .

Spider mites we don't get here, and this is the home of many insects! In fact our bananas rarely get insect infestations and we don't have to do much in combating them. Fungus, however, is a weekly ritual of battle in our area; Sigatoka to be precise. I don't know if yours is also this type of fungus, but fungus is my 1st suspect in your case. You describe exactly the way that our plants become infected, i.e. the youngest, most delicate 3-4 leaves (wouldn't insects think these are the most tasty and tender?) are exposed to the air-borne spores of the fungus. Later as the leaves mature and harden off (insect comment: eww!) the fungus begins to grow and become visible as in your case, along the outer edges.

A sulfur-based spray (Dithane?) is the most common and inexpensive type we use, and only spraying it on those 3-4 youngest leaves, as the mature ones won't be cured. We do have a rigorous rotation of 4 types of fungicides, but for a home gardener not really that necessary.

I don't know... if they were kept outside in Florida wouldn't the humidity be high enough to keep spider mites away? Whatever it is.. looks like a frutstrating problem!

Doesn't look like spider mites at all to me. I would put my money on some sort of fungal infection.

I think its a fungal thing too. Doesn't look like mite damage. Do you see any webbing at the base od leaf? I dunno, maybe I just caught my mites before they did damage. Maybe spray with copper fungicidal spray?

It just looks unhappy to me. Doesn't look like fungus or bugs, looks like environmental stress. Has it been stressed for water or overfertilized during dry weather? The leaf is nice and green, I definitely wouldn't trim it off. If the black edges bother you, then just trim them off with scissors.

I believe Sandy is right with this one! Fertilizer burn with a lack of watering in of the fertilizer.

Quite possibly the soil was not wet enough at pre-fertilizer application?

I am really leaning toward fungus, I cut all the bad leaves and have been spraying just the new leaves with water daily (thinking maybe i can get rid of the spores)and it seems to be working, not to mention it has been cooling off here quite a bit so maybe that has something to do with it as well. Not sure but whatever ever it is it's working.

It looks like it could be an Iron toxicity problem (page 24), possibly manganese toxicty (page 23 bottom of picture 7). I am thinking iron though. That is just what it looks like.

Thats a great website, thanks a lot. Seems like it is Marginal necrosis from soil. not to sure what that means though. One banana is in the ground and one is potted and the 13-14ish other bananas I have don't suffer from this, just the Basjoos. I do buy a bulk potting mix from a landscape wholesaler and use the avocado and citrus fertilizer.
