I would also like to know. Here in Jville, nobody raises ANYTHING to sell or not that I can easily find. The vendors buy from the same farm and do fine but the veggies taste beyond benign.

I grow bananas and plantains primarily. Occasionally, I have other things that I grow like Calabaza or green beans. That being said, my wife does a lot of work in the produce industry and sometimes we trade bananas for other things like cabbage and peppers and most recently Pecans. Finally, I do sell some avocados and starfruit grown by my friends at Erickson Farm. They helped me immensely when I started by hooking me up with some CSAs and Buying Clubs. They are 7th Day Adventists and don't work on Saturday, so I sell their stuff on Saturday.

I have avocados, best crop I have had in the 6 years I have lived at my house. The banana trees seem to have spared the avocado tree.

Wait, only a dollar for the starfruit? At that size, it would sell for five around here!

With a wind event on the horizon, I'm going to take a moment to kick Karma.


Nick, you seem to be the person that complains most about these wind events and it probably doesn't help.

As a child if I complained one parent would say "keep complaining and I'll give you something really to complain about" and the other would say "God never gives you more than you can handle".

Each year seems to bring its own set of challenges. I have been frozen, flooded, dried out, and now blown over in the six years that I have been growing bananas commercially. I am beginning to understand why they say Florida is a "marginal" place to grow bananas. I am still going to be profitable this year, but when you see thousands of dollars in production laying on the ground, it irritates you.

It's just business...Deal with it.

If you want to count your bananas before they hatch then buy crop insurance.

Nick, I don't know you but I've raised some of my own personal food for many years and my family on both sides were farmers. Sure it's business but it still hurts when Mother Nature interrupts your plans and alters your future; human beings understand that. Your loss is very sad to this human.
