Bananas available

Over the X-mas break I plan on clearing a few banana varieties to make room for more. Recently picked up Sweetheart, Mysore, Dwarf Red from Going Bananas. Going to remove all my Blue Java; has taken over and I’m not a big fan anyway (both fruit and maintenance). Plus removing pups from my Mona Lisa, Saba, and Raja Puri.

Anyway, if you are in South Florida (Naples area) and want to pick some up over the coming weeks, let me know. Sorry, not going to mail/ship.

What maintenance don’t you like in regards to blue Java? Just curious as I’ve just gotten mine.

Indeed the Blue Java is a very tall, prolific, fruit is an interesting blue/green. Glad I grew them...

However, it has a bad habit of leaning and you have to prop it up when fruiting. I have two bunches now so propping them up doesn't' look great. Mine is healthy and is constantly is throwing off pups so the mat has spread pretty quickly. I find the leaves on not that great looking in winter (compared to my others), and since it is so tall, cleaning them up is pain. I just found that there are many other varieties that I prefer. Its in prime real estate in my garden so I'd rather have something I prefer there.

If I liked the fruit more, I might hang on to it. The fruit is more creamy than most but at full ripeness was just too soft, somewhat mushy. Once fully ripe it was difficult to peel and left lots of stings attached. It just lacked substance... Sort of a boring fruit compared to so many others that are available. And I find that the bunch ripens quickly at the same time. It is very good frozen so that's what I do with it now.

I know its a popular variety and I enjoyed growing but moving on.

I haven’t tasted them yet but I’ve got a dwarf red and it is an absolutely beautiful plant!

My 2 cents… others may have different experience. I grow bananas for the fruit rather than variety experience. If after 2 or so generations the fruit isn’t to my liking, I pull them.

You can read what I said above about Blue Java. My experience, Blue Java are pretty prolific pupping and fruiting, grow fast and tall, but they do lean. The fruit while creamy texture is too soft, sort of mushy when ripe, plus the strings stick to the fruit. However, the fruit is really good if frozen.

The Namwah is OK. I have a spot in full sun and it didn’t respond well for some reason. I moved a pup to partial shade and its happy now, tall with stout base. Slower growing / ripening than BJ but easier to maintain. The small fruit was sweet but had no acidity or depth of flavor. Sort of boring.

Once you grow and eat both, they are easier to differentiate. You know when you have a blue java, the blue hue is definitely discernable. And peeling / texture is different. We'll see how long I hang on to the Namwah.

That's a bummer the Blue Java wasn't a good one for you, I've heard that from several people so I don't have a desire to get it as I already got the immitation! The tall namwah. Which for me has been very prolific maybe it's location or something as it's been my fastest grower compared to all other varieties I have. I wasn't able to taste the first bunch as it was a dud. Hoping to get to taste it in the next 6 months or so. I also want to grow varieties that taste good and are prolific.

I know I am very ignorant when it comes to bananas. I just thought it would really be neat to have "Blue Javas".
If I can get a one to grow and over winter, I will try another next year.
