Looking for original 'Truly Tiny'

Howdy all,

I'm looking to get ahold of an accurately named 'Truly Tiny'. It's a super dwarf Brazilian originating from Truly Tropical nursery in Boynton Beach FL. If you got your plant directly from them you've got the real thing. Much of what is circulating as TT are really misnamed Super Dwarf Cavendish types. If you got a plant from Agristart when they first offered TT you probably also have the right plant. I'm not sure whether the plant they currently sell as TT is correctly named. Thanks! Steve H

Here is a lead .

I picked mine up at Weatherbee Nursery in Ft Pierce Fla.

The plants were grown out at another nursery(a persons name) but I do not remember the name.
Give them a call.

Howdy! Somehow I missed your TT post last year. Thanks for your reply. I was never able to get a callback from the Florida folks. Weird. Anyway,. Did you ever fruit your TT?

If your asking me......

Not in my area.
Bananas will not fruit in cooler zones like ours..
The plant is a perpetual plant......once you have it ....It will never go away.

The plant is quite common as a short(novelty) landscape plant in many areas.

Many of the ones I have seen in South Florida are quite robust with a big footprint.

I have a Truly Tiny I got years ago from Florida Hill Nursery. Has several nice sized pups on it and would be happy to share. My guess is that it is of cavendish decent because of the wine spots. Not sure I have ever seen the wine spots on my Brazilian.

Thanks for the info folks. I am where I started..........What's the true 'truly tiny'? It may be wishful thinking, but if the original TT were a "dwarf" Brazilian sport I'd love to give it a try. I find that the Cavendish types overwinter poorly for me as dormant p-stems. In the past they've rotted out by spring. Dw Brazilian hasn't had that problem. One day, in the far distant future, I'll confirm there's a superdwarf Brazilian out there, somewhere, which would be perfect feed for my unicorns 🦄. Thanks, though, for the pup offer Mark. If it weren't for those pesky red blotches I'd take you up on it.

I suspect that the concept that 'Truly Tiny' was super-dwarf Brazilian type was just wrong from the start, and it's always just been another random dwarf Cavendish mutant, of which there are many.

The possibility that someone didn't know what they were looking at and misclassified the plant and it entered the nursery trade with bad information attached is entirely unremarkable, it happens all the time.

That being said, I would be happy to be proven wrong, however, I've yet to see any photos of a "super dwarf Brazilian", so without evidence there isn't much to go on except the plants being sold, which are all Cavendish.

And another thing, all of these mini dwarf Cavendish types are pretty much junk for fruit production as far as I've experienced. The are finicky, tend to only fruit under optimum pristine conditions, and are liable to just give up and die back for the fun of it.

However, there are other mini bananas out there which are normal cultivars, and don't have any problem producing fruit. I'm slowly working on a way to introduce these into the nursery trade in a way that is useful to the communities they come from (so please don't bother me about getting them!). One in particular fruits at 2-3ft tall, and my colleague who collected it with me reports that it fruits in about 4months from planting.

I'll just leave this here as a teaser.

It's not nice to tease a Banana grower. Try to get a couple doz. corms into the US. Then we can propagate some new plants. Keep us posted on your progress.

The Truly Tiny and Little joey are good as an ornamental house or patio plants. They are lousy & unpredictable fruit producers.

Howdy Gabe. Another thought: have you consulted with a patent attorney? Perhaps if the plants were patented or you came up with killer trademarked name you could assure that royalties could be directed to the folks you want to help. Members here could try and come up with catchy names that would compel gardeners to buy your baby bananas. Here ya go....'Babydoll'

I don't think you can 'patent' a plant that developed naturally. A patented has to be on a plant one personally developed by cross breeding or by GMO. ..... But one can 'trademark' a name for the plants.

Gabe, what is amazing about your 'tease' banana is that it does not look like a dwarf banana at all; instead, it just looks like a very small banana. It reminds me of the difference between a dwarf person, and a midget person - a dwarf looks somewhat out of proportion, yet a midget looks small but still mostly proportional. The exception on your plant, though, is the bananas are large compared with the size of the plant. It's a beautiful little thing! What other naturally small size bananas have you discovered? That little plant is a total knockout! Oh, and by the way, is it an ABB, AAB, or what?
