My two are about 5 - 6 ft now. Some pics of when I first bought them are in my gallery.

Here's a picture that I took today of the tallest 'Siam Ruby' in the UT Gardens. I stood next to it, and estimate that it is just over 9 feet tall to the top of the leaves. Didn't measure the pseudostem height for some reason.

Hi BigDog,
We were just at the gardens on Saturday, unfortunately, my camera is broken so no photos. Did you notice the solid green pup on the other side?
There were also some huge green Ensetes there, I don't know what variety they are (Glauca??), the base was huge.
Do you know what they do with their plants for the winter? I think the gardens are in a good microclimate with the river nearby and all, but surely the bananas wouldn't make it through the winter???

Hi 1aday! Do you live in Knoxville?

The big green Ensete is E. superbum, which I also uploaded to my gallery. It is a beast! The smaller Ensete, which still isn't exactly small, is E. gilletii (there is a thread I just started yesterday about it). All of the Ensete come inside for the winter. There are 6 species of cold-hardy Musa, plus a Musella lasiocarpa, in the gardens that stay out all year though, and more to trial next year.

Frank, you say the ensetes are overwintered inside. How exactly are they overwintered? Bareroot, potted or how? I have a decent sized glaucum that I will digging up within the next couple of weeks and wondered the best way to overwinter it so I can maximize its growth for next year. Thanks for sharing the pics and I am still overwhelmed with the size of the superbum!!! Got one that germinated this summer from seed and is only about 6" tall right now and it will be going into Cleveland Cathy's greenhouse.

Thanks for the info, Frank.

I live about 50 minutes east, on the east border of Dandridge. We don't go into Knoxville very often, but try to stop at the gardens while we are there.
We like to eat at the Sitar (Indian) restaurant nearby and then we walk around the gardens to digest a bit before driving home....

Sitar is great! I love Indian food. Email me next time you decide to come into town, and I can show you some palms and bananas around town.

Randy, the Ensete are stored bareroot in the greenhouse. I will be overseeing them this year, but probably won't do anything different.

Frank

P.S. That E. superbum is awesome, isn't it?

I actually gasped when I saw the base of it! Then I think drool ran down my chin.

Will let you know when we get into town.

Doesn't it get too warm in the greenhouse to keep them barerooted? I want to hear more, since I have many small ones that won't all fit in the gh. If I can uproot them and mash them all together in a big clump, it would help!

Susan, sorry I didn't see you question until now! No, it doesn't get too warm for the Ensete bananas. That greenhouse is kept at about 60F, so it's more like a cold frame. I have kept small Ensete glaucum under the house for a couple of years, and they seem to do fine. E. ventricosum doesn't do as well, although they all made it the first year. This year, none of them made it through last winter except the E. glaucum. The larger ones always make it through.

Frank

P.S. This thread is supposed to be about 'Siam Ruby', so we should get it back to that.

I said "This guy"(as he had grown the biggest Saba), so I cut his photo from his famous Saba picture and put him under the Siam Ruby.

I was implying that he could probably grow a giant Siam Ruby, too.
I thought about this response and as much as I want to let it go I have to add one more comment..

This was my "Profile Picture" and not some random picture from my photo album. I formerly used this picture on numerous sites as my "Face" to the forum. It is one thing to alter another member's picture without their permission..it is another level when the picture is actually of the member and it is their profile picture. I feel bad reviving a dead thread..but after all this time I am still incensed about this.

The SR does produce fruit. Several months back I saw a new bunch forming on the SR plant in the hothouse at the Fruit & Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. Attached photo is of a SR mat that is 7' tall and 8' wide. Large banana plant in background is a HM.

Wow, this is fantastic news. As far as I know, This is the first time I've seen anyone say they fruit and can vouch for it personally. Wish someone had some pics.

Of course it fruits, the big question is whether or not its edible. From the description of the fruit I have from a friend who fruited it, it is a seeded (non-edible) banana.
