I am a banana newbie (this is my first post) that has become obsessed with the Ae Ae after seeing picture of its beautiful foliage a fruits. Where are you guys finding them? I have been unable to find any store online that sells them. How hard are they to come by? I found one on ebay that is at $75 right now. How much do these typically sell for? Sorry for all of the questions.

I have 1 5-gallon plant available that was separated from the mother plant last year, overwintered outdoors, and is putting out big new leaves. You can see a pic in my gallery (may be spoken for).
I also have 3 mats (each with hanging fruit) and ~50-60 pups ranging in size from 1-inch to 10-feet of pseudostem. I did look at the eBay ad, "we are selling a freshly dug side pups with roots and are ready for planting once recieved". If you end up bidding on this I'd ask how big the pup is because I remember seeing previous auctions on ebay of 3-inch pups... in general the bigger the pup the better your chance of it surviving... |

I'd love to hear what others think as well. Cheers, Andy |

I'm going to try to reply to everyone's PMs tonight. In the mean time, here are two more pups I dug out today.
#4 This pup is gorgeous and tall. The only downside is that due to its positioning in the mat I wasn't able to grab as much corm or roots as other pups. I'm confident that this pup will pull through but might shed some leaves putting out new roots/stabilizing/etc. before it puts out another leaf. AeAe Pup 4 -- 7-31-11 pictures by andy-sundberg - Photobucket #5 This pup has a huge corm and lots of roots. AeAe Pup 5 -- 7-31-11 pictures by andy-sundberg - Photobucket Again, thanks for your patience. I have many more pups but since I dig these out by hand as much as possible to prevent as much damage to the roots and mat as possible it's a time consuming process (my finger nail beds are aching at the moment). |

Andy,
the pup i picked up from you last week seems to be doing fine. it is just starting to put out a new leaf, so it does not seem like there was too much separation stress. Peter |

Interesting post on the caterpillar. Don't know if we have that particular one in California as I have never seen one on any of my bananas. I have caterpillars on all of my passion vines but I let them be as my daughter loves the butterflies and the vines produce so many leaves that the caterpillars only make a small dent in them.

I shipped the double pup this morning and thought I'd share some pics.
I was pleased with the root growth in approximately 2.5 weeks of being potted. I watered only once over that time with a dilute mix of seaweed extract. I'd resisted the urge to water as the bottom seemed to be drying out... ![]() You can see that even the newly emerging pups are generating roots. Is that a pup emerging from the big secondary pup? ![]() You can see that the mix I used was even still moist... ![]() Weather in Ventura has been low 70s for the past few weeks with humidity between 60-90%. This plant was in full afternoon coastal sun. |

Andy:
My Ae Ae seems to be doing well after 3 weeks. It did not lose any of the leaves that I started with and the first full new one is starting to unfold. It is a lot hotter at my house so I am watering every 2 -3 days and so far so good. I have some "sun burn" on the white so I have placed it below the branches of a mimosa tree for filtered sun. I'm looking forward to getting it in the ground in another month or so. |
