Question What does yellow leaves mean?

I had just brought in my banana plants to keep indoors for winter. They were all nice and green leaves to start with. Now a couple of leaves on one or two of the plants are looking a little funky. They now have a yellow-ish color to them. Usually that means too much water right?! However, I have only watered them twice since they’ve been indoors. I am only using peat moss. So it’s not like I have drowned them in water. At least I don’t think so. I would think that they would be under watered. What do you think? Do I water them some more and then cut off yellow leaves? Do nothing? Thanks in advance...

pics would help .... usually plants that are over watered, the leaves will turn yellow & brown more slowly starting at the outer edges.

Could mean that they are fading out, which is normal for the oldest leaves. Could be an indication that they need more sunlight. Could be a sign of under watering. In San Diego right now it could be a sign of 100F temps and no humidity. Etc.

Yeah I thought about that right after I posted this. I will try to take some and then post them later on. Hmm.. Well, it’ll be interesting to see what you think after viewing a picture then! Thanks again!

Very interesting! Yeah I think they might not be getting enough sun thru the windows. Another thing I should check on. Yeah that’s what I thought about under watering too! It really gets that hot in San Diego? Wow! I’m impressed! Thanks so much for replying!

I means the season is over...

If possible illustrate some photos is you can?
Here are some of the looks your plants will have as well as many other concerned gardeners.. this is ongoing till spring.
This is predictable and happens annually.
Even if one brings the plant indoors with inadequate lighting the plant will still show signs of decline.
For me...... this happens to many of my plants

It means winter is on it's way, even if your winter's are mostly above freezing.

Yeah, I just got so busy that I totally forgot to post the pictures the other day! So, Edwmax & Cincinnana these are for you! I tried to post all the pictures I have in my gallery and it didn’t work. I tried to do exactly like it said to in the thread about how to post a picture in a thread. Needless to say it didn’t work. I did however, post some of the pictures I wanted to here using a different method. So, since I have a few more I would like ya’ll to see please check out my gallery pictures. I’m interested to see what the 2 of you think about the plants....

Thanks for the picture! I think that’s exactly what my leaves look like! So I am having to guess you might be right! I was just afraid that my plants were starting to die. I don’t remember this happening before last year though. Can you blame though being a bit worried when you walk in to a room and see what looks like a dying plant. Kinda scary!

Thanks for both replies to me! It definitely helped me feel a little better. I would like to say that I like this picture! The green color of the banana plant and the yellow colored leaves in background are a nice touch! The 2 colors complement each other nicely! Very pretty! As you would say...!

One more thing... I just noticed that the plants are not getting enough light. I do have 2 windows in that room. I only am using 2 thin white covers on the windows for privacy from neighbors! I forgot to get and use my grow light for some of my smaller plants. Can I just use my ceiling light to give the bigger ones a chance at some proper light source? I thought I read that on another thread somewhere. Thanks!

That looks like a root problem. Quite possibly rotted roots from over-watering.
Anything that causes rapid root loss, over-watering, gophers, etc. will cause this.

Does this mean that they’re going to die off then? What can I do to prevent that? Thanks again...

Their growth will slow or they may go dormant until the warmer weather returns. Then it's game on again.

it is amazing how green the bananas can stay when the local vegetation has already changed colour!

Where exactly are you? Do you live in a dry climate? Yellow can mean too little light or too much water or just leaf is old.
