Default What do blue java pups look like when they first sprout?

I have a blue java tree and it's growing quite well lately. I just noticed some other stuff coming up in the planter. It looks like grass of some kind. I went to remove it and I wanted to get it all, so I dug down a bit. When I did, I was surprised to see how deep the roots went. I then got concerned that this may be a pup sprouting. I'm just not sure what they look like when they first appear. To me, this growth seems a bit far from the tree itself to be a pup. It's about a foot away. I'm not sure how far pups grow from the tree. Thanks in advance.

Another quick question. How do I know if this is a water or a sword sucker? (I'm also not sure of the difference, but I imagine I can google that)

When it gets a little bigger (about a foot tall) you can tell by the shape of the leaves. If they start out long and thin and "sword-like" then it's (obviously) a sword sucker. Big, wide leaves on a small pup and it's a water sucker.

Sword suckers have much better root systems supporting them, and so if you separated a sword and a water sucker and planted them side-by-side the sword pup would grow faster will often produce a bigger bunch the first time around.

Awesome, thanks! It's already about a foot tall or almost and it's looking like a sword. So you're saying that they both produce fruit?

Yep! The only definitive difference that I've found is in how they initially grow if you separate them from the mother plant. The sword suckers have a much easier time establishing themselves due to their larger root systems.
