Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
*vent on* Wish there was a real farmer's market around here; I miss talking with growers and not buyers from the same operation who then mark it up but don't post prices because then they would sell less. Huh? You want $2 for a quart of green tomatoes; post it. If your neighbor wants $1.50 for the exact same thing, I will probably buy from them. If neither of you have signage telling me what you expect me to spend, I will walk away empty handed and not come back. But tell me about your farm and engage me and I'll spend the $2 and be your customer next week and next. A farmer's market is where farmer's sell their wares; a market is where vendors do. There is a vast difference. *vent off*
Wow! What a find! I'm really new at this stuff but now I'm wondering if I need to buy exercise equipment for my bananas.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I feel your pain. I love going to farmers markets, flea market, and garage sales. I was not going to buy it but the old man in the stand was very talkative and he knew alot of plants. He alot of varieties, avocados, peaches, guava, and etc. He had it for $15 but after a few bargaining I got it for $8. Luckily that's all the cash I had on me. I will soon return to his stand and buy other plants.
I got them in a workout plan, feeding steroids, and rain water. Bulk them up!! |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I just potted a Musa Acuminata “Colla” received from my friend in Thailand a couple days ago. It has been under a metal halide light for several days but no sign of chlorophyll in the p-Stem. This is very strange. I’ve never seen this before. It’s supposed to be yellow and green. I’m interested to see if it stays all white.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
M. sikkimensis - stopped by a local nursery on the weekend that deals in rare and unusual plants and he had 4 of them; had a "buy one get one" sale so I picked up a Mexican Grass Tree at the same time....

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Last weekend,I ground planted my 'Red Iholene' and a Musa "Cuba".
Musa 'Red Iholene'. I was very happy with how well this one handles shade and how much faster it has been compared to other varieties in cooler weather last year, growing through the coldest part of the year despite having leafs damaged from frost now and then, that I decided to reward it with a spot in the ground. Here it is! Musa "Cuba". This is an unknown variety from Cuba that supposedly produces seedless fruits. Seems like a Fe'i to me in everything but it's not big enough to check for sap color. I ground planted it to help it grow faster hopefully and find out what it is soon! I love Fe'i but all of mine died in a cold and wet winter despite being in the ground. They rotted on site... Hope this one is a Fe'i but has better future in the protected spot I chose for it.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Great to hear that Rob,thank you very much!!! Fe'i do have a distinctive look and feel on them when you have grown them before! I think its easier to mix them with a wild species than with other desert varieties. What have you found their main problems are while growing them and what do they particularly like? This one has barely grown during the past months, just 4-5 leafs I think in its pot,but has a huge corm from what I was told,so maybe it considered its pot too small. Hope it likes its spot now!

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I have had 1 just over a year and it has been slower growing than some and nowhere near fruiting. So I don't know much about them yet from personal experience. From what Gabe has said and I've ready elsewhere, they are more truly tropical than many other bananas and Hawaii is at the edge of the tropics. My oldest one did not like our drought summer, despite daily waterings.
