I cut one hand of the Raji Puri that bloomed in July, I will let it ripen indoors.

The day before Christmas eve I harvested my SH 3640 bunch so I could distribute them to family at Christmas!

I wish you all a prosperous New Year with lots of bunches! :2239:

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

I see some splitting there, and I'm thinking that heavy rain just before a bunch ripens causes this. My last bunch of Hawaiian Apples started splitting even before cutting the bunch, but I have found that if you separate the hands it will slow down the splitting.

There is a lot of splitting and we had the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago.

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

Yeah, it seems like in the summer when there is no rain my fruits never split. Cutting the bunch before they ripen on the plant might help some too.

I can't wait to try them also. I should have a flower(s) in the spring!

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

The is the first bunch of Misi Luki to ripen for me, and also the first bunch harvested in 2010! You might remember this bunch from the Misi Luki contest. Notice the early splitting. This is from the last rains we had and the little bit of warm weather since then.

Tomorrow my wife will help me harvest them but I think it will be a few more days until they are ripe enough to eat. :drum:

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

I cut another hand of Raji Puri--still green but starting to get a little yellow blush. They are the best tasting banana I have ever eaten--not that I have eaten a lot of varieties--yet.

I am glad I learned about cutting one hand at a time--I would hate to have to eat 59 naners in just a few days--even if they are the best.

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

what do the raja puri taste like?

sbl 01-02-2010 11:02 PM

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

They are not as astringent as store bought naners when they are firm. They have a mild tart flavor when firm.

Caloosamusa 01-03-2010 09:57 AM

Re: What did you harvest today bananas

:2200: I started eating the ripe SH 3640 :-) !!! They have excellent flavor! Some of my relatives made Pasteles and Alcapurrias with green ones when they first received them. They said that were softer than plaintain but they came out very tasty!

What is the ideal time frame for harvesting PH.?
I am boiling a couple right now anyway ... comments about it flavor and texture of the fruit are always positive.

Nicely done Emily, the time scale from fruiting til the fruit was ripe is laso interesting. Thanks for pics and info.
