Mitchel ------------- Enjoy those DB's. Just finished my whole bunch and it is one richly flavored naner.

None were left to freeze. Has great shelf life in frig after ripening.

Well the mild winter seems to really affect flavor. This bunch is as good as any of the Tall Brazilians I've grown. I always thought the flavor was a little softer but not this time! My wife only liked the Pisang Klotek fruit until now. Hope we get another mild winter.

Have either of you harvested any Pisang Jari Buaya? If so, how do they taste? I've never seen one in person.

I have a couple of times..it has been a while. I do have one with fruit now (there is a brief shot of it in one of the videos I recently posted).

It has been so long, they are very cold sensitive and prior to this winter everything froze to the ground two years in a row.....I do not recall any thing special about them.

There is a thread that Gabe started:
Pisang Jari Buaya

The pic of the banana poster you posted lists Pisang Jari Buaya and Monkey Finger as the same banana.

Going Bananas lists them separately within their catalog:
MONKEY FINGER - A terrific looking plant that produces very large bunches of long thin bananas with slight curving. It truly resembles the elongated fingers of a large monkey hand and hence obtained its name. The fruit is firm and sub-acid sweet giving it a very refreshing flavor. Height 10-12 ft.

PISANG JARI BUAYA - This hardy dessert variety grows about 8-10 ft. tall with long leaves and a thin pseudostem. The fruit is slender and long with a slightly sub-acid sweet fruit. Rare and unique.

The following is consistent with my experience:
"with long leaves and a thin pseudostem"

They have a picture of Monkey Finger (which I purchased from them) that matches the poster and they list Pisang Jari Buaya as "Hardy"....(must not mean "Cold" hardy).

My experience is that these two are two separate bananas (the ones I grow have different fruit) and the Pisang Jari Buaya is rather thin. The Monkey Finger pups more vigorously than any other banana I grow.

Not much of an answer..when I harvest the current raceme I will post information and pictures on the PJB thread.

Thanks Rmplmnz. Must not be too impressive if you can't even remember any special about it! That combined with it being wimpy in the cold is enough to put me off. I had seen that thread and the Going Bananas descriptions, but I appreciate your first hand impressions. It's a cool looking plant with cool looking fruit.

Thanks, it is a cool looking plant in that it has long thin "upright" leaves somewhat reminiscent of Fehi. I know this is a plant that Ken ("Caloosamusa") is/was very fond of. It would be nice for Ken to chip in and give an opinion on it. I checked on it this am...I need to prop the bunch (I seem to never have enough time) so that it continues to develop and not break the pseudostem. I will keep you posted.

This year (after over two years of no fruit) has been an embarrassment of riches..I cringe every time my wife says more stalks are turning yellow (praying hands this am)..too little time and too much work..

Thank you Chris,

I like its disease resistance and good growth rates during the wet season. But Chris is correct about a very important characteristic, it is too wimpy for South Florida due to its lack of cold tolerance. Hardy describes its disease resistance not its overall hardiness.

Mine are beginning to come back after the dry season decline. I'm going to get pups off the mat I have at the farm and try one in a large pot in a more protected area for the next winter.

Yes, but I did not grow it. For taste it was not impressive, not bad, not sweet, edible. Its resistance to disease characteristics are its important qualities, and the fact that it is an AA, (fertile diploid).

That is really helpful info! Thanks for that, you've saved me time, money, and effort. It's now officially on my "don't bother" list.
