Banana Starters Arrived - It Begins!

The 2 Veinte Cohol pups I ordered from Etsy finally arrived. I think it took a full week from when I ordered. As far as I can tell, they look to be VCs (I compared looks and leaves to those of Banana Man Larry's VCs on his site). They arrived in exceptional condition, and oddly, began transpiring at the tips after I opened the package up (plants are cool-sorry I've never ordered plants so dunno if they just do this from shipping).

I will get these potted and hopefully have some good updates in a couple of months. I'm not too convinced to plant in-ground this year. I dug a hole for my Tropic Snow Peachtree and tested drainage. It is now on day 2 with almost no drainage, so I spread 80 pounds of gypsum on my land to hopefully assist with this (I know there's speculation on using gypsum, but rest assured I am within this exception https://s3.wp.wsu.edu/uploads/sites/.../03/gypsum.pdf "With the exception of arid and coastal regions (where soil salts are high) and the southeastern United States (where heavy clay soils are common), gypsum amendment is just not necessary in non-agricultural areas.") QCTropics on youtube has given me hope in fixing the drainage.

Once I get that in check I'll be planting in-ground. Hopefully, that issue can be resolved in a year's time frame.. especially since I also have 2 kokopo from Larry, and a russian pomegranate tree, white lady Peachtree, and some blueberries on the way from Perfect Plants Nursery. So this should be exciting. :08:

*I'll edit this post with photos as soon I figure out how to..Not sure if they are just trapped in a black hole right now uploading to the gallery*

Good luck with your two new banana additions and other fruit bearing plants.

Before you plant them in the ground amend that soil as much as you can this year so you have a great foundation to start with.

I hope they do well for you.

Thank you! That's the plan this year along with building a nice turf lawn. I'll probably till in some sand, compost, and more gypsum in a month to help break that clay down a bit and soften it up.

VCs have been potted (done yesterday don't worry lol) and are sitting in my SW facing window, it gets probably 6 to 8 hours of light there.

How long would you keep them indoors before taking them outside? The instructions said to keep them indoors upon arrival for a few days to a week. Seems long to me. Regardless, I'm keeping them potted this season. Hoping they keep me busy with transplanting to larger pots every month or so.

Little update on the plants, they are still adjusting to outdoor life it seems as their growth has been pretty slow. The kokopo arrived in alright condition. The one that arrived with damaged leaves is really taking a while to settle in. On top of that, I set them outside in a shaded area that gets maybe one hour of morning sun right when they arrived and traveled for a few days from work. During those days, temps went down to around 36 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour or so and were in the mid 40s during the day. Needless to say, none of the bananas enjoyed that but they did survive.

Also transplanted all of the pups into larger pots a few days ago as the weather is starting to stay above the high 50s low 60s (Fahrenheit) here in SE NC.

I also ordered a Veinte Cohol pup that should be arriving soon. Very excited for the prospective "Tropical Flavored Banana".

I'm interested to see the potential growth from your plants, and if you're interested I can also post the growth of mine when I receive them in this thread aswell!

Anyway, I hope it works out best for you, I have to get back to work! :2738:

Here is the Etsy shop! :nanadrink:

https://www.etsy.com/shop/ZiPlantsFl...about-shopname

Also ordered a Mysore and Kokopo.

Very excited as per my research the Mysore is the "Pisang Kalang", and that is supposed to be the "strawberry shortcake" tasting banana.

As the Kokopo should be a slightly less, but still tropical, orange fleshed banana.

Nice! It's the same seller I bought mine from so we'll be able to compare them. Not that it matters but it's funny they use that profile picture because if you go to their website it's some dude lol.

I'd be interested in seeing how your kokopo does too as I have 2 growing as well.

Yeah man I'm pretty excited! Although a thought crossed my mind, there wouldn't be much stopping the seller from selling water suckers. It doesn't say what type of plant or if it's TC either. Then again, we are the type of people to create accounts on a 20 year old forum to talk about their love of bananas lol.:waving:

Your plants should be ok with the low temps but it surely cold shocked them a little. You are doing what I would do and keep them in pots this year so they have a great start next spring. Are you sure that your temp reading are correct. Here around 90 miles up the coast we have been in the 50's as lows.

Hahaha that's right! So far they look good and are pushing new leaves about each week. My kokopo continue to slowly grow and that might just be a characteristic of them or a result of the cold shock they took. On top of that we had some nasty gusts last week and it nearly dropped one of my kokopo. It lost a leaf but still has one and another pushing thankfully. I found someone local selling pink velvets for $10 1g pots and $15 for 2g. I think I might grab one. The fruit are pretty and I'm a 2nd Gen immigrant in the US. I've eaten plenty of fruit with seeds. Guava and cactus fruit being 2 really tasty fresh tropical fruit with seeds that don't bother me. So I'm excited to try one of those pink velvets.

Thank you, Jeff! I remember frantically checking the weather app and it reading in the mid to high 30s that weekend of Mar. 25th but wasn't for long maybe one hour. I can't confirm if it truly was that cold. I looked at the history for that weekend and it shows lows of 37, yikes. https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/ca...eather/2134199

Potted my newest pups!

Took the names that were taped to the bags and used them as labels.

Looking great over there! Are they indoors or outdoors?

Is the site really slow for anyone else? Taking minutes for pages to load and can't upload pix.
