Not really. That was one reason why we moved here. I grew up in New York and always hated the cold.

Looks like you are going to be busy planting! I dug the Ae-Ae yesterday that I got from you. The pstem is still relatively small and we are forecast to have temps down near freezing tonight and the next night. I figured since it was still small and I could dig it and overwinter it in a greenhouse so easily that there was no reason to take the chance. Hope you are doing well!

Congrats to your collection, we are bananists and bananaholic.
I live partielly in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. I also have one banana collection, but it is not possible to get your cultivars to Brazil because of the import restrictions by one new law from 2005. But I try to get contact with one banana researcher at Embrapa. Best wishes Joaochm |

Sorry for the delay. I was in Minnesota last week freezing! I think it was smart to protect the AeAe. I'm happy she is still doing well for you. All of the plants we have shared are doing well. The dwarf niño is doing great! I have most of the bananas in 20 gallon pots while they await there new home. Pots are crazy expensive here so I use the 20 gallon tubs with rope handles. I buy them at Walmart and drill holes in the bottom of them. We started looking at land to build a house. Landscaping it will be exciting and painful. Not much soil here just volcanic rock! Jack hammer time! Take care and Merry Christmas.

Hi,
but the volcanic soil is very fertile, see also Tenerife and the Canary Islands! The Canary Islands are the banana growing area of Spain. I saw many banana plantations in the north of Tenerife, especially in the Orotava Valley near Puerto de la Cruz. I was many times on Tenerife, I love the island because of the banana plantations very much, but I could not buy land and house, because the prices increased so I could not save enough money. So that I looked in South America, at first in Peru, then one friend brought me one Brazilian student to me, she became my guest daughter later to finish her study at the university of Hamburg and to make the doctor. She told me that her dad was selling his banana plantation and I wanted one part of his banana plantation. But he has already sold all. I traveled with her and my wife in 2007 to Brazil to the first time. Her mom found one chácara. The neighbour of this chácara wanted to sell his chácara to me, so that I purchased the chácara in 2008, it was much cheaper than on Tenerife! You should think about banana growing of Tenerife, this is possible at your new home like on Tenerife! The Canary Islands are also volcanic like Hawaii!!! Make it so like the Canarian banana farmers! Best wishes Joachim |

The soil is fertile, but on his island there are many areas where there is no soil and just miles and miles of virgin volcanic rock. |
