For a couple of weeks now this site has been either off line or loading very slow for me but no problem with other sites at all. Have others here experienced this?

You can use a popup blocker or what I use is ad block, it's a browser extension and I don't see any adds or popups on the site.

Yes it's been very slow lately. Very annoying especially for admin purposes.

So often i get “cannot decrypt raw data” from safari

I get the same cannot decrypt raw data 80% of the time then when it loads, its extremely slow.

It might have something to do with the old webpage architecture the site was built with. A lot of long-standing webpages have unoptimized modules/coding that can make modern browsers choke. Still has a kitschy charm.

Transferring the forum to a new system in an intact state would put even savvy web designers in a cold sweat. Kind of an unwinnable choice between data integrity vs access.

Kind of strange to note how it did something like this around the same time last year though.

I've also noticed how slow the site has been recently. I've been completely unable to get it to load for a while. I managed to get on a couple of days ago for the first time in weeks, but yeah it's really been struggling speed-wise. One thing I've noticed is that on the homepage at the bottom, it's showing that the most users ever online was today, and I noticed that it was similar the other day too. With up to 34,799 users online at once I imagine the server this site is running on has been overloaded. I am wondering if this is some sort of Denial-of-Service attack, rather than genuine users.

There are so many custom modifications we did here in the early days on the forum software, photo gallery, wiki, etc, and many of the software that runs the site has reached its technical end of life. There is no easy upgrade we can just do without an enormous amount of time and effort and valuable resources to custom code a modern version of what we’re used to here. There are forum software we can migrate to but we would lose a lot of the data that just wouldn’t have anywhere to map out to, as the feature sets of what’s available these days doesn’t quite match what we are stuck with now.
Having said all that, we will be doing some technical housekeeping here in the upcoming days and try and improve the bad experiences.
