Should I be worried?

Hi all!! New to bananas and any advice would be great. I received a TC Gros Michel about 2 weeks ago. Container potted to get ready for fall/winter here, Midwest zone 6a. Slowly acclimated before placing in a south facing window. Now I’ve got a pretty big (about nickel sized) patch of discoloring on the stem. It’s not mushy or soft but the area of the stem affected appears to be “wilting”. Soil has been moist but not soaked. I tend to over water so I’m trying very hard to slow down. Soil is miracle grow cactus mix. Any thoughts/advice would be great. Thanks.

Yes, be worried.
But it’s fixable. You’re mix isn’t lush enough for bananas they’re heavy feeders.
Add any compost top soil to the soil mix no more than an inch of water �� in containers. Wet it good until water drains out the bottom.

Too much water (wet all the time) will induce fungus.

Fertilizer in a couple of weeks, you don’t want to burn the root ball/mat.
Less is more.

Thank you!! I’ll pick up top soil tonight. I’m assuming I should remove the plant dump the old soil and start fresh with my top soil/potting mix? Is it necessary to satanize the container again before replanting?

I suggest erring to the “planted too shallow” vs. “planted too deep” side too. I think planting too deep is the reason for the potted plants that I have lost.

I have never lost anything in my patch. I have pups that I have separated/pulled out of the ground and leaned up against the fence that after two months are still alive and growing. But pots...forget about it!

Another question: Should I take a razor blade and try to slice away the discolored patch, or just let it be and let nature take its course?

Yes to all the above,
By keeping it wet you may already have fungal spores.
Once you add the lush organic top soil fungus will thrive.

is that a self draining pot? if it doesn't drain there is part of you problem.
