I'm also surprised that you would like the Cavendish over the Namwa. Have not tried the 3640 but I have real good luck with the Namwa and it's my "Go to banana for taste and yield. But that's what's fun about the bananas, diversity.

After reading many posts from people like yourself, having to suffer with crappy bananas, I've made attempts to help. In the Tropics, we can grow all the cultivars, but consumers just won't buy the crappy bananas like the Namwa and Hua Moa. Plus in the Tropics it only takes us a few months to evaluate a cultivar as opposed to several years for you cold weather warriors. I've been evaluating many cultivars for cycle duration, vigor, plant size, fruit size, bunch size, and eating qualities. Although I mainly focus on short cycle cultivars, which many appear promising. Hua Moa vs. Tigua Both are Pacific bananas in Genome group AAB Cycle Duration Both are Short Cycle Vigor Both are very vigorous Plant Size Both have similar height & girth Fruit Size Both acceptable Bunch Size Both acceptable Taste Hua Moa is a low quality cooking & dessert banana Tigua, I'll have to wait a few more days but I've been told to expect a very good banana.

All things equal, I would take Namwa over Cavs every time. Cavs are bleh… The only reason I eat Cavs are that they are dirt cheap.

I beg to differ. Someone is buying lots of Namwah and they are paying $0.90/lb wholesale to buy them. I sell enough Hua Moa at $0.50 per fruit, to say that someone is buying them. I put out samples, people love it and buy it. I get calls with some regularity because people find me on the internet and they want pallets of Hua Moa. I am not saying they are the best, but there is a pretty damn good market for them.

Those two crappy bananas Namwah and Hua Moa are bananas that Don "Going Bananas" recommended to me. i was just there this week and he told me Hua Moa was one of his favorites. I certainly don't claim to be an authority on bananas but I do respect Don's opinion and have had very good luck on his recommendations for my area. But my preference is most home grown naners over store bought Cavendish, but that's just me, your milage may vary.

Going through the photo gallery, there isnt much pictures of the 3640 since the first pictures posted in 07 by Greenie and Nanaman. In fact, there are only 3 pages totaling 50 pics. Super dwarf cavendish has way more pics. It would be great if for those who have them to PLEASE take pics and post in the gallery so that if Agristarts have these available as tc, we can positively ID them albeit in tc, adolescent and fruiting stage. Cheers ![]() |

Please put me firmly in the "Don't like Namwah" category. Tried them twice from two different places. They tasted the same and I didn't like either one. I was so looking forward to liking them, as I have two in my yard. My kids didn't care for them, either but my wife liked them. I tried them both times in varying stages of ripeness. I just do not like them, sorry.
That said, I recently got a 3 foot 3640 pup from Worm farmer and it's starting to take off so maybe next summer I will have some of those to eat. My theory is that some have the real deal 3640 and others got an imposter from somewhere, and I don't know who got the real one so I will be taking lots of pics and doing the legwork and whatever I have, I hope I like them.

Bagging the bunch is done mostly for aesthetic purposes, like those spots on your bananas. It makes them prettier, mostly.

Ok good to know......
Another question from a newbie..... Do you bag a few if you want them to ripen at different rates...,do you bag the whole bunch while on the tree for a beautiful bunch.....do you bag them just as they are getting ripe......yes, I really am a newbie, I am on my second stalk. |

I believe Nick bags mature bunches for cosmetic reasons. Bugs, sun burn.... easier to sell.
I'm with Keith --- gotta love the SH3640 - one of my early mats. I love my Viente Cohol also. Joni --- I have pups if you want them. Dan |
