Ok….I bought a scanner to scan some old pics. My scanning skills are not the best and the pictures are old and not necessary the top quality…so please bear with me.
First pics are from a trip to Going Bananas Fall 1994 shortly after the Chafin’s purchased GB from Bill Lessard. It was an amazing banana plantation; Lessard had traveled the globe accumulating over 100 different species planted on 5 acres in Homestead, Fl. This article references the sale; but only mentions 35 banana varieties: Miami Food and Drink Examiner: Going Bananas grows bananas Many of the bananas they grew were part of the collection and were not regularly available for sale. Anyway..feel free to add unusual banana travels to the thread….I will continuing sorting and scanning old pics…. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] Last edited by Rmplmnz : 05-20-2009 at 10:54 PM. |

These pics are from a Rare Fruit tree sale at the Fruit & spice park in the Redlands District of Homestead, FL (Fall 1994).
Friends of the Fruit & Spice Park - Home In the days preceding the prominence of Tissue Cultures Don would take baskets full of corms and set-up racemes of fruit displays…it was amazing. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] |

Let me guess, "T. R. HoveyPapaya"?
Who is that masked man? Kru, of course! Looks like the picture of Kru from Agrisatarts. Only, this one is faded, though this must be the original. These pictures are great, Chris. Were these taken at the GB plantation? Thanks for sharing. |

Chris, your thread got me to thinking about my first exposure to banana growing that motivated me to grow bananas. I had been in Hawaii many times in the 1980s and 1990s but it was visiting the village in Canhas, Madeira (Portugal) in November 2004 that really got me interested in growing them since this is where my grandparents came from about 100 years ago (my grandfather made 3 trips here before he was settled here for good).
This photo with my son Michael was one small garden of bananas near where my grandparents lived. I wish I had taken a more detailed photo. Anybody want to guess the variety being grown there? Click twice on image for larger version. I know it's not as impressive as all the varieties there at GB, but the experience at Canhas left some great lasting memories! Thanks, Harvey |

Thanks, Chris. I didn't mean to imply that I didn't think this wasn't a great variety (cultivar), but not like looking at 100 different varieties! As far as I could tell, everyone in Canhas grew the same variety.
