Chris, your thread got me to thinking about my first exposure to banana growing that motivated me to grow bananas. I had been in Hawaii many times in the 1980s and 1990s but it was visiting the village in Canhas, Madeira (Portugal) in November 2004 that really got me interested in growing them since this is where my grandparents came from about 100 years ago (my grandfather made 3 trips here before he was settled here for good).

This photo with my son Michael was one small garden of bananas near where my grandparents lived. I wish I had taken a more detailed photo. Anybody want to guess the variety being grown there? Click twice on image for larger version. I know it's not as impressive as all the varieties there at GB, but the experience at Canhas left some great lasting memories!

Thanks,

Harvey
