I doubt wind will be much trouble where you are, unless it goes south of the BI, but then again, you have no soil... Watch out for flooding on the mountainside.
I know some others live there as well, but I am not sure where they are. All Y'all be safe, too.

Thanks Steve! Even the 20 mph winds have snapped or knocked down a handful of nanners. I expect to enjoy some of nature's pruning Saturday, haha! But no reason to think there will be any house damage right where I'm at, just some unhappy dogs and endless yard work but what else is new?

We are located in lower Puna. Right near Pahoa. Hasn't been too much damage to our yard yet, but there is more to come. I hope Rob does well, he is in a smaller subdivision than I.

We've got some huge albizia across the street... so they may come down on the lines. Other than my fruit trees.. we don't have too much to worry about.

Hang in there Rob!!

Couple trees just went down. Two Fe'i are hit, Mysore, Cacao took a hard hit as well. I am biting my nails.

Hawaiian Beaches I assume, or further south? Anyway, I sure hope all turn out ok. Seems to me, being on a steeper incline with no soil, flooding would be more of a worry than wind. I have seen video of the torrents gushing through HPP and Orchidland after a big rain.. WOW.

The last time we had big winds I had about 5 bunches that had just set blow down. I had some bamboo pieces already cut and cured, and made some "X bracing" by tying a little string loosely around the top of the bamboo. With a helper, we propped the plants up at about 45 degrees. I was shocked that ALL of them ripened, pretty much normally, over the next few months. The last one took almost 6 months. I watered and gave a little dirt around the base. there were a few more yellow leaves than usual, but overall they were surprisingly healthy plants.

Wasn't too bad. Lost maybe 7-8 bunches and 20 stalks snapped or fell over completely. Losing Mysore at the edge of my lot was no surprise. They're quite lean for the height. Losing a lot of Baraganete plantain was a surprise since they're so thick. Of course, everything snapped/fell in the complete opposite direction from which I propped them because the strongest winds came from the south. None of my really rare ones, like the Hawaiian Maia were harmed at all! In the scheme of things 5-6" of rain in the driest month of the year after fertilizing probably did more good than harm from the winds. The storm was nothing like Iselle 2 years ago, which did lots of damage in the area, though little to my yard then.

Well, Rob and Juicy and anyone else on the B.I.... Batton down the hatches, again... I know Mauna Loa usually pushes them away. but you never know when the storm won't move... You'll get some rain, that's for sure. The catchments will all get filled.

Thank you. There are mixed feelings going on here. Some people believe it will be worse than the last system we had. I need to spend this evening moving all the potted plants in.

If it is I fear for my yard. We live in an old Ohi'a forest that had died... what's left is a deadly skeletal graveyard. We need to cut them down, but I have very little extra time. Hopefully none of the trees get smashed... the bananas can actually take a beating.

We only have four fruiting racks right now.... I fear Rob may lose a bit more. Good luck Rob & Bob (right?)!!!!

At least they aren't albizias... I guess that's what insurance is for. You are up in zone 7 or something, right? Up near Hamakua or Kamuela if I remember... Insurance is cheaper there than Puna, at least. Stay safe and remember it's just "stuff"... So long as your family is safe.

Thanks! Juicy Bananas is just a few miles from me in one of the hardest hit areas during the last hurricane. Basically 100% chance of tropical storm force winds. I'll have time Thursday morning to see how bad it is, then fly to CA for the weekend. I probably have 60 bunches. If I lose 1/3 of them I won't be surprised. TS Darby last month snapped a lot of the tallest stalks.

So far just a minor storm here too, though the low lying coastal areas had flooding from the storm surge. Brief periods of high winds and rain where I am, but less rain than some other days this past month.

Lester looks to be heading far enough north not to impact the island. Interestingly, I learned yesterday that apparently the mountains don't really impact the hurricanes. I had heard differently for years, but it's just something people assume apparently.
