Pup selection

How to make Banana selection................to improve the quality of the plants.........???

Iīm thinking in pup selection.............

In my house...........I donīt have enough space to cultivate big mats.........

I leave just one pup.........per mother plant...............

So I have to chose which pup I will select................

My question is :

Are there genetic diferences between pups from the same mat....???

Can I select the best pup.............to improve quality........size......and etc......???

no, pups are genetically identical to the mother plant. that being said, you want to aim for the "sword suckers" and not the pups with broad leaves.

If the pups are identically...............how they make selection..........to improve quality.............???

Or create new varieties..........???

Re: Pup selection

Go for the fatest pup if the form is identical between pups. You may have to go through many generations on a particular mat to get a new variety "sport" if ever. If you want new varieties, you may wish to consider cross breeding between existing varieties that are viable pairs.

Somatic mutation: "sports". New varieties arise by genetic mutations within the somatic tissues (e.g., Williams from Dwarf Cavendish) or by breeding different varieties to create new genetic combinations. All your pups will be genetically identical, unless you get a somatic mutation, which is very rare.

TNX........now I undrstand it...........

I started on Bananas about a year.............getting experience with few common Brazilian varieties...............as Dwarf Cavendish............Purple..............and few others..............

I made several experiments with pups................ trying to select the best pups...........

One of this experiments..........I planted from the same mat............a sword and a water sucker............at the same time.......................and at the end...............both of them sprout their own sword pups........

I didnīt harvest fruits............because I was faced with leaves shoke...........this mat had this leaf problem and I erradicated all this plants..........."Prata" variety.................

I have other varieties without leaf shoke problems.............in the same Garden.........this happens only in this mat...........also I have other "Prata" mat collected in another place............that donīt show this leaf problem...........

Unfortunately this happen in the pups of my experimente (Sword X Water sucker)...........and Iīm not able to conclude till harvest fruits............

But now I recieved my Thousand Fingers pup................and itīs growing........

And I realy like to work with this kind of Banana..............

I plan to improve the size and quality.................of 1000 Fs.........

I donīt know exatctly what to do............to improve it..........

I was thinking in working with pups............I donīt know........???

Here's an example of a possible sport (mutation). I've had this Namwah mat for about 8 years it recently produced a pup with a pinstripe on one side of the plant and now a second leaf emerged with a pinstripe.

Review: Domestication, Genomics and the Future for Banana

These various plants have been collected from multiple, independent sources in the wild, so the hybridization events and mutations giving rise to the seedless and parthenocarpic characters have occurred many hundreds of times. Where fertile plants occur together, hybridization continues to produce new diversity and parental combinations. Simmonds considered five plant characteristics that lead to farmers picking plants for cultivation: plant vigour, yield, seedlessness, hardiness and fruit quality, the first four of which are related to polyploidy (triploidy).

My interest in Ae Ae Banana is growing............

Today I found this link that shows a White Ae Ae pup.........in the same mat of variegated ones............

PlantFiles: Picture #7 of Ae-Ae, Banana, Pisang, Plantain (Musa paradisiaca)

The Picture is from here Bananas.org..........but Iīm not able to find the original thread.............

Something tell me that there is a slight diference between pups of the same mat...........

And I can select it...........

Is this a right thinking........???

Or this is a sport mutation of Ae Ae........???

You have two basic types of pup selection, one where you select the strongest pup and the other is where you select in a certain direction. When I select pups I usually leave the strongest pup, unless that pup is going to interfere with the bunch. Most of the time, my selections hold. However, I do occasionally have to go back at flowering and either remove the sucker or try to tie it out of the way. On my main farm, I am at the point where I generally have a steady stream of bunches, so I now select the sucker that is 180 degrees from where the bunch is hanging.

Ae Ae is a special case. It is a genetic chimera. The differences among pups have to do with how much of the mix of the two cell types each pup gets. Pups with different appearances (phenotypes) will not produce pups with the same appearance in this case, i.e., it is not a stable sport.
