Pisang Raja

Shoot, meant to title this thread as "Pisang Raja?" and can't figure out how to change it!

My "Pisang Raja" is fruiting, and just began to open in the past week. Trying to determine if it really is. From the Kepler & Rust book, it matches some of the description, in terms of height and up pointing leaves giving the plant a feather duster appearance. But it's different in other ways. Originally a TC from Aloha Tropicals which is just slightly more accurate than picking a banana type at random.
Petioles more open than other AABs I have, but not as open as AAAs. No reddish on the underside of the leaves. No red midribs. Hmmmm....

Anyone who has grown these and who is sure about the ID of what they grew want to weigh in? They are clearly different than any of the 30ish other varieties I grow.

I just put a big sucker in for the first time. Got it from Nick. Got to taste some fruit and they are superb. Will post pics later on.

Pisang Raja

Strangely enough, your bunch looks similar to my current goldfinger bunch. My P. Raja came as a sucker from a plant that I had harvested.

It looks fairly similar to the one I got from Going Bananas. I posted a picture about a month ago. I'll have to post an update soon, but here's the older picture again.

I'm not sure why the rachis is clean, perhaps I don't have what I think I have. I'll have fruit soon so hopefully whatever it is it will be worth it.

servatusprime, you have these photos labelled as Raja puri, not Pisang raja -- which are two different plants. It is definitely not Raja puri, based on the clean rachis and fairly closed petioles. Could be Pisang Raja, but I don't really know what it should look like. The description in the Kepler and Rust book doesn't seem to match any of the photos of plants in the Pisang Raja subgroup on MGIS.

Whoops!!! Epic brain fart, you are right! For some reason I get these two confused sometimes. I have them side by side. Do you think it is pisang raja? It flowered from tissue culture at about on year and it's about 7.5' at the p-stem. Sorry for the confusion.

It's probably neither. If I recall correctly, Pisang Raja is supposed to be very tall. And to me it looks like it's not Raja Puri because the male flowers are not persistent. Or did you clean off the dried up male flowers?

Well I cleaned off the first one or two but then it started doing it on its own. Let me know what you think it is if you have a good guess. I was half wondering if its dwarf brazillian if not raji puri. Thanks.

Can you get a picture of the entire plant and the male bud so that I can compare it to my Raja Puri?

If it is dropping the male flowers and bracts without your assistance, it is not Rajapuri or Dwarf Brazilian. The lack of red edging along the petiole canal is another trait they both would have, but that this plant lacks.

I really don't know what it is. As Andreas mentioned, it seems too short for Pisang Raja -- despite disagreement among "authorities" on bananas, they seem to be in agreement that it is a tall plant, and yours is not. Also, Pisang Raja is supposed to have a "messy" rachis, with retained bracts and male flowers, but yours is clean.

To me it looks more like an ABB variety than an AAB variety like Pisang Raja. Sorry I can't be more certain.

Hi Rob, do you have any photos of this plant. Were the female flowers yellow. Does it look anything like my Not Praying Hands plant. I got my plant from aloha tropical also.

I've never had one that looks like that. My Aloha PR turned out to be a Tall Brazilian which had a problem with fruit filling out. I killed it. PR as described in Kepler & Rust Is incorrect and it's just a Mysore variant. That I have and it's a great plant without banana streak virus. Maybe yours is the real thing.

Thanks Gabe, I think so too. Aloha Tropical sells Pisang Raja, the description from Going-Bananas fits, (14' tall). Thanks again. I harvested this bunch a little early because the top banana started to turn yellow. The plant was so tall even on the 9' ladder I couldn't get a good look at the whole bunch.
