Default Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream

Today I received 3 new banana plants. I had ordered a Musa Dwarf Orinoco, Musa Dwarf Namwah and a Musa Ice cream.

The Dwarf Orinoco and Dwarf Namwah made it in one piece, but unfortunately the pseudostem of the Ice cream got damaged during shipping. I really didn't want to cut off the top of the plant, but I don't think there was any other option. It was a shame, because the leaves appeared to be in such a good state.

Here is a close up of the damaged pseudostem on the Musa Ice Cream:

Here is a picture of all 3 together, after chopping the top of the ice cream off:

Nice! Hopefully they grow well for you. Those seem like very big plants to ship.

Yeah I was surprised how big they were when they arrived, I was expecting them to be no bigger than the Dwarf Orinoco was. In the picture I had already repotted the Dwarf Orinoco, it arrived in a really small container that was almost completely squashed during shipping.

The centre of the ice cream's pseudostem has already grown about 2.5 cm (or about an inch) since I cut it yesterday. I was surprised at how quickly it has started to protrude, I can almost watch it as it grows

Your dog looks like he is waiting for the bananas to pop up.

Hi Peter

You got some nice varieties there, will these be grown in a greenhouse and what do you plan to do with them, in the winter months.

Haha well spotted
Yeah 3 of them are Musa Basjoo, and 1 is a super Dwarf Cavendish pup that I transplanted last week.

I'm going to try and grow them in large containers outside, during summer and them overwinter them indoors. I do have access to a family members greenhouse, so if the British summer doesn't go quite to plan i'll probably move them there. I mostly wanted to get some dwarf fruiting varieties, but then I saw the Ice Cream and just had to order it too.

Ice cream, dwarf namwah and Cavendish varieties will not grow outside in our cool summers Peter, they will just sit there and sulk, they will need a greenhouse.

Dwarf Orinoco can be kept outside as a bedding plant.

Yeah I was afraid that would be the case. I'll give them a couple of weeks of being outside in the day and inside overnight and see how they cope. What varieties have you managed to grow outside in our climate?

Yeah it is great advice. I bought these three plants from a German store: Bananenstauden.

I have sent few out that are just a ball of banana joy..

Peter it's very nice to see you're still into growing bananas after all these years lol. I myself was just doing some gardening this morning and decided to salvage an old corm that was growing in a long-forgotten pot on the patio for some time. There's just a tiny bit of corm left, and a small banana:

That didn't stop it from putting out a baby! Precocious little thing.

Being the shamelessly lazy gardener I am, I'll just put it into this 26 L pot one time instead of something more appropriate so that I won't have to transplant it for a while. I'm sure it'll start growing furiously in no time and fill the container with roots

Hope your bananas are handling the British winter well!
