New here, new plant, new to banana plants too

Hello, I just got a Musa Acuminata 'Siam Ruby'. Or at least that is what was on the tag. There are two in the pot. One red, one green. They are both about 18-24 inches tall. Would these be two different plants or just different color verities? I am going to repot them, should I try to split them and put them into two different pots?(Whick is what I was planing to do) On the tag it says they get 6-8' tall, is that right? I should take them in for the winter right? That shouldn't be a problem with all my other(read: LOTS) house plants. I have a small jungle in my house in the colder months, a small jungle out back in the warmer months. I have never had a banana plant before but love the way they look. Any advice or info would be very much appriated.

pot them separately.
bring them in for the winter.

thats my suggestion.

Hi Anna,

First I would believe that you indeed have two different bananas in one pot, Possibly "siam ruby, the red one, and margarita, the green one, but if by some chance they are one plant I would still split right down the middle. Then I would plant each in a fairly large pot, I'm growing in 15 gallon containers now, using a well draining moisture retentitive mix. In the winter i brought in my bordelons bought late last year and put them in your brightest window and continue to water. Banan plants need space to grow so the bigger the pot the better. you may find that making your own mix is easier to get the results you want.

anything that drains well would work. there are lots of options. i dont use soil anymore but i would always put some clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot for better drainage. i dont know of any brand names to try, i would buy what my local nursery would suggest. i am growing my bananas in coco, hydroton and rockwool mini-cubes.
