New to Bananas
I am new to growing bananas in Southern California. I planted an Ice Cream variety and a Puerto Rican Plantain. They are doing very well and growing rapidly. What should I use for fertilizer and how often/when should I fertilize?
When I planted them a few months ago, I added a lot of compost and steer rotted manure into the hole, then topped with more compost. Do they need anything else? Thanks ahead of time for your help. |

Re: New to Bananas
Sounds like you started them right. If you want to push them hard you can supplement with something as simple as a balanced NPK product like triple 10 or 13.. I personally would leave well enough alone if they are putting out a leaf a week or so. Pushing them with fertilizer is only really necessary if you need to ripen fruit in a climate to short for the variety.

Re: New to Bananas
Thank you for the advice. I am going to leave them alone. The pups I planted were about a foot tall. The new pups are now close to 4 feet tall and putting out 1-2 leaves per week. They look very healthy. We make our own compost, so that's what we are using for mulch. I water daily. I was just wondering if there was an annual feeding schedule like citrus. Can't wait to start my groves.
