They look great! I'm sure they'll do beautifully for you. If any questions pop up, don't forget to post them here. :-)

Re: My New Bananas!
They do look nice--good luck with them!
|
Re: My New Bananas!
Where di you buy them from?
|
Re: My New Bananas!
I would limit the sun that the siam ruby gets at first or the leaves will get scorched. When i took mine outside and it was green like that it got fried. Im sure it will be nice and red in no time though. Good luck with them.

Re: My New Bananas!
I got them off ebay from hortus119. He has a lot of really nice stuff and i couldn't be happier with how quickly i got them and how well they were packaged.
Yeah i agree with you guys about the ruby. I am actually keeping them all in my lanai that only gets morning/evening sun to help them adjust. It is insanely hot right now and the sun might even scorch the other ones as well. |

Re: My New Bananas!
Amber, I see you have a big, well situated garden (geographically I mean). So I guess it will be a banana/coconut/palm garden in no time.
Also, please do post progress pics, 'cause everyone here would surely love to see them. :) Btw. I know Miami is according to Koppen climate map classified as Am (monsoonal tropical climate). Is Cape Coral Am too, or just like the majority of Florida Cfa (humid subtropical climate). I guess coco palm trees grow there without any problems, right? Some pics of Cape Coral in the "Show me your region" thread would be very much appreciated. :woohoonaner: :0517: |
Re: My New Bananas!
thats a good idea i'll check out "Show me your region" thread. I'm not really sure, i think all Florida is humid subtropical climate, but i ca't seem to find a more detailed florida map to find out.
I will do progress pictures. AND GUESS WHAT I JUST SPROUTED MY FIRST BANANA TODAY!!!!!!! A Darjeeling banana!!!!! |

Re: My New Bananas!
I know.....My name is Amber and i am a banana addict.........................

Re: My New Bananas!
Cape Coral is great climate wise(and generally!!!!)and most tropicals can be grown there. 45F is the usual low they get for a few nights a year and last winter i remember it got arround 35F there. The vast majority of tropical palms and plants can be grown there with the exception of some extreemely cold sensitive species like Pigafetta sp. which although they do can be grown most years, when it goes 35-40F they are out....From what i know, only the Keys are classified as trully tropical in FL.
Btw,Cocos nucifera grows no problem in Cape Coral and much farther north of it! From Orlando and South, all coastal areas can grow it and the cool tolerant variants like Jamaican Tall and Panama Tall can even survive in inland locations. The more cold sensitive varieties survive with just some protection in the worst years. Enjoy your climate Amber and grow lots, lots lots of palms, cycads, tropical trees and bananas!:goteam: |
Re: My New Bananas!
This last winter temperatures hit 27F degrees at least once with several nights below 0C, in Cape Coral. Usually Coconut palms do well here. Many coconut trees were not killed outright by the cold but many died later from associated crown rot brought on by the cold weather. This winter was the toughest I've seen in Southwest Florida. For the banana that faired best in the cold check the cultivar section of my photo gallery, specifically Musa itinerans itinerans.

Re: My New Bananas!
I take my kids to school at 6am and last winter my car said it was 15F :coldbanana: and I think it stayed about 30F for weeks. I know that it was out of the ordinary though. I had a 7ft royal poinciana that died from the cold and some black bamboo. Also the bananas i had died, but produced new pups when it warmed up. Hope that doesn't happen again lol :ha: Ohhhhhhh check this out!
This is me scraping ice off my car with a CD in south florida, lol They don't sell ice scrapers here lmao |
Re: My New Bananas!

|
Re: My New Bananas!
Yeah I have actually talked to him on the phone and I am wanting to order a couple things from him :D
|
Re: My New Bananas!
Check out how red my siam ruby has gotten in only 6 days! Other than an evil caterpillar incident it's doing great. I can't say as much for my little baby banana though, the tip is turning brown :(
Here is my poor baby banana :( |
Re: My New Bananas!
Isn't it crazy how red Siam Rubies get when you put them out in the sun! And it happens so fast! Thanks for sharing the great pics with us AN!
|
Re: My New Bananas!
Hey Amber
how much sun is ur red gettin? Think we're in the same place. Is it getting morning, afternoon sun? How many hours of sun? Thanks |
Re: My New Bananas!
I have worked it up the the point where it's pretty much getting full sun until 2-3pm. It's ready to go in the ground i think, but i wanna wait my my lawn guy comes and cuts my jungle of a lawn first......i don't think he would see it planted and run it over lol When it goes in the ground it will get full sun from the time the sun rises to the time it sets, so i'm hoping it will be happy. The black thai is doing good in the ground and is already putting out new leaves.

Re: My New Bananas!
So what kind is your baby banana? :^)
|
Re: My New Bananas!
It's a Darjeeling :)
|
Re: My New Bananas!
Hi Amber I just looked at your pictures wow your doin good with all your plants. Great job ! I just took my Siam Ruby outside a few weeks ago we are finally getting are heat here. I noticed the ends were kinda burning too, but its turning red fast. I love your garden too. Thanks for posting have fun
|
Re: My New Bananas!
Beautyfull bananas you got there Amber, congratulations!:woohoonaner: They seem to be grown to perfection!
I think your baby is unhappy because its kept too wet. Put it in a hot place receiving a couple hours of sun maybe too and let the the container lid open to dry up a bit. If the roots are not too much damaged,it will be fine and grow at a good pace then. I am germinating my banana seeds in my greenhouse/hothouse with half day sun and they germinate well and give robust seedlings. I only water when the top cm dries out a good bit. |
Re: My New Bananas!
Looks like your bananas are doing great! Yep, she's got the sickness alright!
|
Re: My New Bananas!
My 2 Ice Cream Bananas came in today! They cut off the leaves for shipping, but just the stalks are about 2 feet tall. I also planted my Ruby and yellow lotus in the ground today. I also dug a narrow trench so i could run my cheep home depot sprinkler system to my other plants that are about 15' away. Woot no more hand watering for me!
I think I need banana rehab........ |
Re: My New Bananas!
Here are some new pictures from today. I think my little baby banana might be trying to grow.....hmmmm it might just live, we will see! The weather says it's going to feel like 108 degrees today lol hope the newly planted guys do ok...
My two Ice Creams. They are about 2-3' tall. They had about 3' leaves on them before they were cut off for shipping. A Ensete Ventricosum 'Maurelli' I got a couple days ago Yellow Lotus In The Ground Siam In The Ground Oh and here is my baby, I think it might be trying to grow a leaf......:lurk: |
Re: My New Bananas!
Thanks for the pics Amber. Those IC's look a bit slender right now, but I'm sure they'll fill out in due time. And I think the baby will be just fine with some careful watering. Be sure not to get the sprout wet during hot sunlight hours or it will probably get scorched.
|
Re: My New Bananas!
everything is still doing good, but the new leaf on my yellow lotus is kinda damaged looking. Any ideas what it might be? Could it be sun damage? I noticed during the day the leaves seem to curl some, you can see it in the pictures. Any ideas?
And here is another picture of my Siam with a new leaf, I freaking love this banana! |
Re: My New Bananas!
By the way, your Golden Lotus is actually a Musella lasiocarpa, or Chinese Yellow Banana. Its quite hardy, short and stocky, and should do well for you. It has pretty yellow blooms.
