My Misi Luki Awak is the sturdiest banana I've grown.

The prediction for today in San Diego is 20+ mph winds.

So, what I gather is none of the truly tall cultivars (15'+) can handle wind over 30-50 mph. Cardaba folds (see Clare's posts), Kandrian topples (Nick), tall Brazilian = Hawaiian apple folds, and tall red folds. Any exceptions in the really tall ones? Of the medium ones (10-15'), Misi Luki Awak is the toughest, with some other honorable mentions, like FHIA 18 and Pisang Klotek.

Thanks Tony. To interpret the secret code, that is, Tony's "not Mona Lisa" is also good in the wind.

Our winds were "only" up to 35 or so here so didn't lose any bananas. Unfortunately, a tall (125'?) eucalyptus across the highway fell and crushed an old grain silo.

Winds here got to maybe around 60 mph last night here. And lo and behold, my plants are virtually untouched! Glad I put them in protected spots.

Hot winds daily + 38F overnight temps ==> very unhappy Fuchsia plants.

The dryness (<15% humidity), the warm winds, and the cold nights have made for some sad looking banana plants in So Cal. My yard can attest to that!

Wow. The lowest humidity I've had here this week is around 28%. Deserts are usually in the upper teens.

By the way, the valve surrounded by the yellow barrier is a PG&E 12" line under 1,200 PSI. Maybe could have been a big oops. Tree was about 100' tall and about 100 years old.

Today we had 7 hours with relative humidity between 8-12%. That's at a NOAA weather station only a few miles from the beach. Just matters what direction the wind is blowing. That's been typical of the last several days. When the wind is blowing out of the east, the humidity is super low.

Wow, pretty impressive, Jon.

Had to chuckle a bit, as my son was watching the video the same time as me he viewed the eucalyptus and said "that's some pretty good firewood". I reminded him it was going to be chipped.

Another tough day for bananas in Ventura/Camarillo: gusts over 30 mph for several hours (with a few hours with gusts from 40-46 mph), relative humidity 10-20% since morning, night time lows in the high 30's. The new leaves since the last big wind event are now all shredded.
